Two SWAC Freshmen Added To Jerry Rice Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ( - Two freshman football players from the Southwestern Athletic Conference have been selected to The Sports Network's 2013 Jerry Rice Award Watch List.

The Sports Network announced its initial 20-player watch list with Kourtney Berry (Alabama State) and Javancy Jones (Jackson State) joining the ranks of some of the top redshirt/true freshman that have impacted their teams on the season.

On the season, Berry currently leads ASU in tackles with 53 (26 solo) including 8.5 for a loss. In addition, he has recorded 4.5 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. He was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Week for his heroics in the Hornets' 40-39 over defending SWAC champions Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He followed with a newcomer selection after ASU defeated Alcorn State 49-30.

Jones ranks among JSU's top defenders with 29 tackles including 14 solo. He has registered 3.5 sacks with 10.5 tackles for a loss and forced fumble. In the Tigers' 35-7 victory over Texas Southern on ESPNU, he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for his first score of his collegiate career.

The award, in its third year, is handed to the top freshman in FCS Football and is named for the legendary wide receiver who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State.

The Jerry Rice Award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season.

The initial position breakdown includes five quarterbacks, five linebackers, three running backs, two wide receivers, two defensive ends, one cornerback, one safety and one punter. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has the most nominees with three.

Towson running back Terrance West won the inaugural Rice Award in the 2011 season and Villanova quarterback John Robertson received the honor last season.

The Rice Award Watch List can undergo revision during the season. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation on December 16 in Philadelphia.
