The 40th Anniversary Atlanta Film Festival

The 40th Anniversary Atlanta Film Festival  kicks off this Friday, April 1st and runs through April 10th.  There are over 150 events and it's expected to host over 25,000 attendees.  Here are some of the films I am looking forward to:

Ben (Paul Rudd) has suffered a terrible tragedy.  In need of work, Ben becomes a caregiver for Trevor (Craig Roberts), an 18-year-old from England who has muscular dystrophy. The two decide to go on a road trip that will change both their lives.  Director Rob Burnett will be in attendance

It's no secret that one of my favorite films of the past five years was "Boyhood."  Director Richard Linklater follow-up to that amazing film is a somewhat sequel to his 1993 landmark film "Dazed and Confused."  A group of college baseball players make their way through the days and nights of college freedom. Blake Jenner, Zoey Deutch and Tyler Hoechlin star in the film.

Sonia (Cristin Milioti) is a neurotic jingle writer who has always dreamed big. When her boyfriend suddenly proposes, she must reevaluate her life.  Screenwriter Levi Abrino will be in attendance.

"In Pursuit of Silence" is a meditative exploration of our relationship with silence and the impact of noise on our lives. In our race towards modernity, amidst all the technological innovation and the rapid growth of our cities, silence is now quickly passing into legend. From causing aggressive behavior to hundreds of thousands of heart attacks around the world, there is no aspect of human life that noise does not infringe upon.  Director Patrick Shen, Cinematographer Brandon Vedder and Co-Producer Cassidy Hall scheduled to attend.

Dicky St. Jon (Bruce Hampton) is an owner of a greyhound racetrack. In an attempt to save his track, he decides to bet his rival, Mak (Fred Willard), in a winner, takes all event.

7 Stages Theatre

Three documentaries about Southern themes:

"Hotel Clermont" documents the last days of a storied Atlanta hotel and the lives of its residents. Director Heather L. Hutson and Photographer Elissa Benzie scheduled to attend.

"The New Orleans Sazerac" is a short documentary that explores the expansive history and modern applications of the classic cocktail through interviews with historians, authors, experts, and bartenders. Director James Martin and Producer Jen West scheduled to attend.

"Eat White Dirt" weaves the story of Tammy Wright, a 37-year-old mother addicted to eating kaolin, with that of scientists, local historians, a physician, an artist, and three other practitioners of geophagy, or earth-eating. Director Adam Forrester, Producer Davin Green and Editor Jeff Jay scheduled to attend.


"The Arbalest"  (2016)

The inventor (Mike Brune) of the world's greatest toy reflects on his past, especially the woman (Tallie Medel) that grew to hate him.  This film just won the SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Award.  Director Adam Pinney, Cinematographer Hugh Braselton and Actor Mike Brune are scheduled to attend.


"Sound + Vision"

Ponce City Market

Now in its fifth year, Sound + Vision combines some of Atlanta's hottest bands with experimental films and incredible art installations.  This is always a highlight event of the Atlanta Film Festival.

When the estranged patriarch of the Jones family dies on their doorstep, the family is thrown into chaos.  When the paramedic who answers the 911 call tries to win over Jean, his attempts are thwarted by the families past.   Director Stella Meghie and Actors Erica Ash, Taylour Paige and Sherri Shepherd are scheduled to attend.


"Morris from America"  (2016)

Morris (Markees Christmas) is a 13-year-old boy growing up with his father (Craig Robinson) in Germany.  Morris is trying to fit in with the help of a tutor (Carla Juri) and his classmates.  Director/Writer Chad Hartigan scheduled to attend.

"Miles Ahead"  (2015)

Don Cheadle wrote, directed and stars as legendary jazz musician Miles Davis, who hasn't been heard from in the five years. Wannabe Rolling Stone reporter Dave Brill (Ewan McGregor) connives his way into Miles apartment and into his life. As Davis and Brill talk, Miles flashes back to his meeting and falling in love with his first wife, Frances Taylor (Emayatzy Corinealdi).
