Alcorn State 13, Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas - Alcorn State University forced and recovered a fumble to preserve a 20-13 win over Texas Southern in Southwestern Athletic Conferenceaction on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Deion McNair stripped the ball and William Thomas recovered the fumble to help ALC (6-2, 3-1) pick up its third consecutive win.

With the score even at 13, John Gibbs connected with LaDarrien Davis in the fourth quarter for the final score. He found eight different receivers throwing 15-of-40 for 230 yards and two scores.

Arnold Walker rushed for 130 yards on 23 carries (5.7 avg) to helped the Braves gain 441 yards on offense. On defense, ALC forced three turnovers including one interception and two fumble recoveries. Devon Francois tacked on 11 tackles including nine solo.

TSU (1-6, 1-5) threatened late in the fourth quarter when McNair sacked Homer Causey to end the 57-yard drive on the Braves' 33.

Causey led the Tigers in passing and on the ground. He threw for 226 yards and one interception from 17-of-32 passing. He also rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries for a 7.3 average. Malik Cross hauled in a game-high eight receptions for 110 yards to lead all players.

Brandon Thomas and Jarius Moore led TSU's defense. Thomas finished with a game high 12 tackles followed by Moore's 10.

ALC took a first quarter lead on two Haiden McCraney field goals of 40 and 27 yards. TSU went out front 7-6 on a two-yard rushing score by Daveonn Porter and extended it on Eric Medina's 30-yard field goal. The Braves retook the lead 13-10 with a John Gibbs Jr. scoring pass to Anthony Williams III from 32 yards out. A 44-yard Medina field goal tied it at the half.

TSU finished the game with 391 yards on offense.


Prairie View A&M 51, Mississippi Valley State 14

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Prairie View A&M University scored 37 straight points en route to a 51-14 win over Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Blackshear Stadium.

PVAMU (5-3, 4-2) racked up 532 yards on offense and held MVSU (1-6, 1-4) to 178 yards.

De'Auntre Smiley and Jerry Lovelocke shared time at the quarterback position combining to complete 29-of-43 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers.

Smiley threw 17-of-20 for 178 yards with two interceptions and three touchdowns. Lovelocke completed 12-of-23 for 141 yards a touchdown. Both connected with Deandre Cooper to account for three touchdowns. Cooper tallied nine receptions for 96 yards.

Jerome Howard and Raheem Cardwell both finished with six tackles apiece. Howard added an interception and shared a sack.

MVSU tied the score at seven with a Patrick Durr seven-yard touchdown run with 11:54 to play in the first half. The Delta Devils would not score until the fourth quarter on a Patrick Ivy one-yard plunge.

Jeremy Collins led MVSU in rushing and passing totaling 123 yards (56 rush / 67 pass). Julian Stafford had four catches for 43 yards and 72 yards from kick return.

Kevin Eugene led the Delta Devils and all defensers with 10 tackles and a forced fumble.


Southern Defeats UAPB 29-27

PINE BLUFF -- Lenard Tillary rushed for a career-high136 yards and a touchdown as the Southern University Jaguars spoiled homecoming for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 29-21 on Saturday afternoon at Golden Lions Stadium. Southern improved to 4-3 overall, and increased their lead in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division at 4-1. Meanwhile, UAPB fell to 0-7 and 0-5.

Tillery's also had three receptions for 29 yards. Quarterback Dray Joseph passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-30 attempts.

UAPB quarterback Ben Anderson had 266 yards passing and 99 on the ground. He rushed for one touchdown and passed for two more. Anderson was an efficient 24-for-28 in the air. He was intercepted once off of a deflection.

Southern struck first on their opening drive as Tillery ran it in from 26 yards out. The extra point was blocked, but kicker Greg Pittman picked up the loose ball and plowed into the endzone for two points, giving the Jaguars an 8-0 lead with 9:11 left in the first quarter.

The Golden Lions responded quickly, driving 75 yards on eight plays to get on the board. Anderson did it with his legs, racing in from eight yards out. Tyler Strickland tacked on the extra point, making the score 8-7 with 6:14 left.

After a stop by the UAPB defense, the Golden Lions pulled ahead on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Isaiah Ferguson with 31 seconds left in the quarter. The touchdown and point-after gave UAPB a 14-8 lead.

The second quarter belonged to Southern as the Jaguars scored two touchdowns to reclaim the lead. Joseph had a pair of touchdown passes, the first a 32-yard strike to Willie Quinn and the other a 16-yard TD pass to Nico Talbert. The touchdowns gave Southern a 22-14 lead at halftime.

Late in the third quarter, the Golden Lions moved closer to the Jaguars on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Jamie Smith. The Smith's touchdown pulled the Golden Lions within a point at 22-21. But, Southern answered with a 13-play, 90-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard sneak by Joseph, extending the SU lead back to 29-21 with 8:34 left in the game.

The Golden Lions were driving for a potential tying touchdown, with a 2-point conversion, it fizzled when Drayton Willis coughed it up at the Southern 35-yard line and Southern recovered. UAPB got the ball one more time, but with only 20 seconds left and no time left, there was no chance.

The Golden Lions will head to Itta Bena next week to try and pick up there first win of the season when they face Mississippi Valley State.
