Opening this week at a theatre near you:
Warm Bodies (2013)
The zombie apocalypse has happened and humans are barely hanging on. R (Nicholas Hoult) isn't your ordinary zombie, as he is very aware of his surroundings and thinks too much. His world changes when he saves Julie (Teresa Palmer) from his fellow zombies. But the big questions are - why did he do it and can he keep her alive? Warm Bodies Website
What to Watch For: Don't think of this as your ordinary zombie film, as there is quite a bit of romantic comedy within the film.
Word on the Street: Nicholas Hoult is much in demand these days, having appeared as the character Beast in the 2011's "X-Men: First Class" and has completed the the much anticipated upcoming films, "Jack the Giant Slayer" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." Next on his slate, a sequel to "X-Men: First Class."
My Take: Director/Writer Jonathan Levine is making a name for himself with films such as "The Wackness" (2008) and last year's "50/50."
Bullet to the Head (2013)
A hit man (Sylvester Stallone) and a New York City detective (Sung Kang) band together after losing people they care about. Now the two men are out for revenge and won't stop until the deed is done. Bullet to the Head Website
What to Watch For: Director Walter Hill ("48 Hrs.," "Red Heat") is back directing this film after a ten year feature-film hiatus.
Word on the Street: The chemistry between Stallone and Kang is said to be one of the best things about this film.
My Take: Can Stallone do what Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham couldn't do - have an action film open big at the box office?
Stand Up Guys (2013)
Val (Al Pacino) has just gotten out of the pen after 28 years. His best friend, Doc (Christopher Walken), picks him up when Val is released. The former mob guys go out to celebrate like it's going to be their last night on the planet. And, since Doc has been given orders by the local mob boss to kill Val, it could be their last night on the planet. Stand Up Guys Website
What to Watch For: Jon Bon Jovi wrote two songs for the film.
Word on the Street: Hot off his Oscar nominated role in "Argo," Alan Arkin steals every scene he is in as Hirsch, the getaway driver for the gang.
My Take: Actor Fisher Stevens is directing his second feature-film. His first was the 2002 Indie comedy "Just a Kiss."
Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) and Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) are retired music teachers in their eighties who have been lovingly married for more years than either one can remember. But their lives will be challenged when Anne suffers a series of health issues, and their love will be tested as never before. Amour Website
What to Watch For: Emmanuelle Riva is riveting in the role of Anne and has been rewarded with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Many critics feel that she has a great chance of winning.
Word on the Street: Writer/Director Michael Haneke based the script on experiences that happened within his own family. He wrote the part of Georges specifically for Trintignant who came out of retirement to play the role.
My Take: The film is a sure bet to win the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. What is more remarkable is that this film is also up for four other Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Achievement in Directing, nominations the Academy rarely gives to foreign films.
If you can't make it to the theatre this weekend, stay at home and watch movies on CW69.
The Grand (2007) One Eyed Jack Faro (Woody Harrelson) has entered a poker tournament in Las Vegas in an effort to keep his family's hotel/casino which is ten million dollars in the hole. But he's up against the Schwartzman twins (Cheryl Hines/David Cross), Harold Melvin (Chris Parnell), Andy Andrews (Richard Kind) and The German (Werner Herzog). Can One Eyed Jack win the big one and save his business, or will he go bust?
A League of Their Own (1992) During World War II, two sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty) join the first professional female baseball league. Former Major Leaguer, Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is given the task of rounding the girls into a winning team. Bill Pullman, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell also star.
Like Mike (2002) Calvin (Bow Wow) is an orphan who loves basketball. Following his favorite team the Los Angeles Knights.
