Preview This! The Heat
Opening this week at a theatre near you:
"The Heat" (2013)
FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) has made it her life's work to take down the bad guys, to the point where she has no social life. Now she's hot on the trail of a ruthless drug lord, and her investigation takes her to Boston. But, her worst nightmare happens when she gets partnered with a local Boston cop, Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), who hasn't had a partner in years. For good reason, no one can get along with her. (Main Image courtesy of Gemma La Mana/Twentieth Century Fox) The Heat Website
What to Watch For: Director of one of the most anticipated films of the summer, Paul Feig, also directed the 2011 monster comedy hit, "Bridesmaids."
Word on the Street: Sandra Bullock has shown she can do comedy with "Miss Congeniality," but she is going to have to be at the top of her game to keep up with scene stealer Melissa McCarthy.
My Take: I don't remember looking so forward to a film like I have with this one in a long time.
"White House Down" (2013)
A capitol policeman, John Cale (Channing Tatum), with dreams of someday working in the Secret Service, is on a White House tour with his daughter (Joey King) when it's attacked by a terrorist group. Now Cale may be the only thing between the terrorists and the President (Jamie Foxx). White House Down Website
What to Watch For: Channing Tatum, who is hot off of last year's "21 Jump Street" (2012), "Magic Mike" (2012) and this year's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (2013), is in line to be the next big box-office action hero.
Word on the Street: The film is being compared to "Die Hard" (1988), "Air Force One" (1997) and for it's a little over the top action sequences, "Independence Day" (1996).
My Take: I am hearing that the exchanges of dialogue between Foxx and Tatum are the highlight of the film.
"Fill the Void" (2013)
An 18-year old girl named Shira (Hadas Yaron), who lives in a Tel Aviv ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community, is about to meet her potential husband in this world of arraigned marriages. But Shira's life changes when her older, married sister, suddenly dies giving birth to her first child. Suddenly, Shira is pressured by friends and family to marry the husband of her late sister. If she doesn't marry him, he may move with his newborn to another country. Fill The Void Website
What to Watch For: The film has won numerous awards at film festivals and won 7 Awards from the Israeli Film Academy, including Best Actress for Hadas Yaron.
Word on the Street: The film has gotten great reviews and was the Israeli entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards.
My Take: It is always interesting to see the lifestyles of different cultures in a film.
If you can't go to the theatre this weekend, stay at home and watch movies on CW69.
