"The Angry Birds Movie" (2016)
Red (Jason Sudeikis) has an incident at kid's birthday party and is sentenced by a judge to take anger management classes. There he meets the teacher, Matilda (Mya Rudolph), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride) and Terence (Sean Penn), all of whom soon go on an adventure with Red. "The Angry Birds Movie" Website
What to Watch For: This animated film was shot in 3-D. Rovio, a Finish company, partly backed this film, spending $100 million, the most for any Finish film.
Word on the Street: Josh Gad at first turned down the part of Chuck, as he thought his character was too similar to Olaf from "Frozen." A 30-minute pitch from the director convinced him to take the part.
My Take: If this film is a huge success, expect more films to be made from the games you play on your phone.
"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" (2016)
Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are expecting their second child and need a bigger house. The problem is they are never going to be able to sell their current house with the new neighbors next door, a hard partying sorority, led by Shelby (Chloe Grace Moretz). Mac and Kelly are going to need reinforcements, and Teddy (Zac Efron) is the man for the job. "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" Website
What to Watch For: Most of the film was shot in the Dunwoody, Georgia area.
Word on the Street: There are some surprise cameos in the movie.
My Take: The first film was a surprise hit at the box office. Can they make it two in a row?
"The Nice Guys" (2016)
In 1970's Los Angeles, private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) must work with enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) to find a missing girl. Along the way, they just might run into a few problems, like stumbling onto a conspiracy that could get them killed. "The Nice Guys" Facebook page
What to Watch For: The film was shot in Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia.
Word on the Street: Film critics are very excited about this film from writer/director Shane Black ("Lethal Weapon," "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang").
My Take: "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is one of my favorite films of all time.
"A Bigger Splash" (2016)
Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton), a famous rock star, and her photographer boyfriend, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts), are vacationing on a remote Italian island. Their life is disrupted by expected visitors, Marianne's old flame, Harry (Ralph Fiennes), and his daughter (Dakota Johnson). "A Bigger Splash" Facebook page
What to Watch For: The film has been a big hit at film festivals around the world, including the 2015 Venice Film Festival where it won two awards.
Word on the Street: Margot Robbie had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with "The Legend of Tarzan." Her role was then taken by Dakota Johnson.
My Take: In my opinion, Tilda Swinton is one of our greatest actors.
"The Meddler" (2016)
A recent widow, Marnie (Susan Sarandon), needs a project to keep her busy, so why not be in every aspect of her single daughter's (Rose Byrne) life? "The Meddler" Website
What to Watch For: Writer/director Lorene Scafaria also wrote the 2008 film, "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist."
Word on the Street: Film critics who have seen the movie are raving about Susan Sarandon's performance.
My Take: With films like Sally Field in "Hello, My Name is Doris." Blythe Danner in "I'll See You in My Dreams, and this film, people will see movies with women over 50 in the lead.
"Viva" (2015)
When his father returns to his Havana, Cuba, a hairdresser named, Jesus (Hector Medina), is forced to give up his one true love, being a drag queen at a local club. "Viva" Website
What to Watch For: The film was Ireland's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
Word on the Street: The director of the film, Paddy Breathnach, is known for his 1997 film, "I Went Down," which won numerous awards at film festivals.
My Take: I am interested to see a film shot in Cuba and directed by an Irishman.
If you can't make it to the theatre this weekend, then stay at home and watch movies on Atlanta's CW.
