My Take: I have been a fan of Jason Segel since his role as Rush-loving drummer Nick in the TV series Freaks and Geeks.
No Man's Land (2021) PG-13
There is a 'no man's land' between the Rio Grande and the actual border between Mexico and the US. Jackson (Jake Allyn) is a promising baseball prospect that is waiting for a tryout while working on his parent's ranch. Out trying to stop rustlers stealing his family's cattle, he accidentally kills a Mexican immigrant boy and goes on the run to Mexico to find the boy's father and find forgiveness. What to Watch For: The cast includes Frank Grillo, Andie MacDowell, Jorge A. Jimenez, George Lopez, and Alex MacNiicoll.
Word on the Street: Frank Grillo, who plays Jackson's father in the film, is known for his role of Brock Rumlow in the Marvel Universe.
My Take: I always enjoy a modern-day western.
Identifying Features (2020)
Magdalena (Mercedes Hernandez) embarks on a dangerous journey to find her missing son. Along the way, she encounters Miguel (David Illescas), a young man who just recently was deported from the US. Identifying Features Website
What to Watch For: The film has been a huge hit on the film festival circuit, including winning the World Cinema Audience Award and the World Cinema Special Jury Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for director Fernando Valadez, whose previous short films, 400 Maletas, and De este mundo won numerous awards on the film festival circuit.
My Take: The film is at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on twelve reviews.
Acasa, My Home (2020)
Documentary on a family of nine children and their parents who live in the wilderness of the Bucharest Delta, right in the middle of a busy city. What to Watch For: The film won the Cinematography Award for Documentaries at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Word on the Street: The film also won the Viktor Award at the 2020 DOK.fest in Munich.
