What to Watch For: The film is directed by Chad Hartigan, the award-winning filmmaker that brought us Morris from America (2016) and This is Martin Bonner (2013).
Word on the Street: The film is written by Mattson Tomlin, who also wrote the upcoming film The Batman.
My Take: I loved Chad Hartigan's 2016 film Morris from America that I saw at the Atlanta Film Festival a few years ago.
Saint Maud (2019) R
Maud (Morfydd Clark) is a devout hospice nurse who has a mysterious past and becomes obsessed with saving her dying patient's (Jennifer Ehle) soul against her belief that sinister forces are threatening to put an end to her holy calling. Saint Maud Website
What to Watch For: The film was a big winner at the 2021 British Independent Film Awards, winning eight awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best British Independent Film.
Word on the Street: Director Rose Glass won the IWC Schaffhausen Filmmaker Bursary Award, which was presented to her by legendary filmmaker Danny Boyle.
My Take: I am ready for a good suspense film.
A Glitch in the Matrix (2021)
Documentary filmmaker Rodney Ascher asks the question, "are we living in a simulation?', just like the film The Matrix. A Glitch in the Matrix Website
What to Watch For: Rodney Ascher brought us the award-winning documentary, Room 237, about all the strange theories based on Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining.
Word on the Street: Ascher got the inspiration to make the film from one of his interview subjects in his documentary on sleep paralysis, The Nightmare (2015).
My Take: This should be a lot of fun to watch.
Two of Us (2019)
Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier), are two retired women who have a secret that they have been living with for decades; they are in love. To everyone else, the couple are simply neighbors who have a door that connects their two apartments. However, their lives are about to be turned upside down, and their long relationship will be tested when the truth comes out. Two of Us Website
What to Watch For: The film was just nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language.
Word on the Street: The film has been a massive hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Audience Award at the 2020 Montclair Film Festival.
My Take: I can't wait to see this film as I have heard great things about it from fellow film critics.
Dara of Jasenovac (2020)
In the summer of 1942, the family of ten-year-old Dara (Biljana Čekić) was taken and placed in two Nazi-occupied Croatian concentration camps. Dara is a witness to the horrors of the camp, and after her brother and mother are killed, she tries to save the lives of others in the camp, including the life of her brother. Dara of Jasenovac Info
What to Watch For: The film was shot in Serbia and directed by the award-winning director Predrag Antonijevic.
Word on the Street: The film is Serbia's Academy Award submission for Best International Feature Film.
My Take: I am always interested in seeing films about World War II.
