Eddie (Taron Egerton) has always wanted to compete in the Olympics. He discovers that there hasn't been a British Ski jumper since the 1920's.  Now if he just figures out how to jump, he can compete for his country. Now he needs help learning how to jump. Can he persuade Bronson (Hugh Jackman) to coach him.   "Eddie the Eagle" Website

What to Watch For:  The film is based on a true story of Eddie, who became an overnight sensation at the 1988 Olympic games.

Word on the Street:  The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take:  I hear that Christopher Walken makes a cameo appearance in the film.

The film opens at a number of Atlanta area theatres on Friday.

 

"Gods of Egypt" (2016)

What to Watch For:  The director, Alex Proyas, has cited the following films as his influences on the film: "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), "The Man Who Would Be King" (1975)," Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981), and Sergio Leone's Western films.

Word on the Street:  The film will be released in 2D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D.

My Take:  I am interested to see this movie as it was shot with a new camera, called the Primo 70.

"Triple 9"  (2016)

A gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town. "Triple 9" Website

What to Watch for:  The film has an excellent cast including Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot, Kate Winslet, Norman Reeds, Aaron Paul, and Casey Affleck.

Word on the Street: The script was on the Black List scripts of 2010.  The black list is an annual survey of the "most liked" motion picture screenplays not yet produced.

My Take:   The writer of the film, Matt Cook, directed the excellent 2008 documentary "Swim."

"The Club"  (2015)

Four retired Catholic priests share a house in a small Chilean beach town.  Their world is turned upside down when a fifth man shows up and makes them relive the past. "The Club" Website

What to Watch For:  The film won the Jury Grand Prix at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.

Word on the Street:  The film was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language.

My Take:  I have wanted to see this film since it won the Best Picture award at the  2015 Austin Fantastic Fest.

The film opens on Friday exclusively at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema

"Vice Versa"  (1988) Returning from a business trip abroad, Marshall (Judge Reinhold) brings back a mysterious ornamental skull. Marshall has custody of his son Charlie (Fred Savage) for a few days, and both are unhappy in their lives. Unbeknownst to them, the skull has magical powers and, after father and son both wish they were each other's age, they magically transfer bodies. Now they must deal with what they wished for.

Sunday

"Planet of the Apes"  (2009)    (2001)  An Air Force astronaut (Mark Wahlberg) crash-lands on a planet. It turns out the planet is ruled by talking apes the dominated and enslave humans.
