What to Watch For: Nicole Kidman immediately said yes to the role of Atlanta when the movie's director, James Wan told her she would be a 'Mermaid Warrior.'

Word on the Street: James Wan says that the film is inspired by adventure films Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Romancing the Stone (1984).

My Take: I have been looking forward to this film since hearing about it about a year and a half ago.

The film opens nationwide on Friday.

Mary Poppins Returns (2018) PG

Decades after her last visit, Mary (Emily Blunt) returns to help the Banks family through a difficult time in their lives. Mary Poppins Returns Website

What to Watch For: Besides Blunt, the stellar cast includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Ben Whishaw.

Word on the Street: There are a couple of surprise cameos.

My Take: I am anxious to see how well Emily Blunt sings.

The film opens nationwide on Wednesday.

Bumblebee (2018) PG 13

On the run in the year of 1987, Bumblebee (voiced by Dylan O'Brien) takes refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) discovers Bumblebee battle-scared and broken. She is able to restart him, and together they take on the people trying to hunt Bumblebee down. Bumblebee Website

What to Watch For: In this film, the Transformers take on the look of the original cartoon series from the 1980s.

Word on the Street: This is the first live-action Transformers movie that Michael Bay did not direct.

My Take: The film is currently at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes with 55 critic reviews.

Second Act (2018) PG 13

Maya (Jennifer Lopez) works for one of those big box stores. She decides to try and move up, lying on her resume and gets her dream job. Now the question is can she keep it? Second Act Website

What to Watch For: The strong cast includes Vanessa Hudgens, Milo Ventimiglia, Leah Remini, Charlyne Yi, Treat Williams, and Dave Foley.

Word on the Street: Julia Roberts was initially attached to the role of Maya, played in the film by Jennifer Lopez.

My Take: The director, Peter Segal, has directed a number of films including Tommy Boy (1995), 50 First Dates (2004) and Grudge Match (2013).

The film opens nationwide on Friday.

Bird Box (2018) R

What to Watch For: The director of the film, Susanne Bier, won an Emmy for directing the outstanding limited series The Night Manager.

Word on the Street: The film was written by Eric Heisserer, who was an Academy Award Nominee for his screenplay of the 2016 film Arrival,

My Take: This film has a couple of my favorite actors, John Malkovich and Sarah Paulson.

The film opens in select theatres nationwide on Friday.

Welcome to Marwen (2018) PG

Mark (Steve Carell) was savagely beaten outside a bar and had to relearn how to walk and talk. He lost the ability to draw (he was an illustrator) and to deal with what Mark has gone through he takes pictures of dolls in the make-believe town of Marwen. Welcome to Marwen Website

What to Watch For: The character of Mark likes to wear women's shoes. Steve Carell had to train for two months to be able to walk comfortably in high heels in the film.

Word on the Street: The film is based on a true story and the award-winning 2010 documentary Marwencol (2010).

My Take: The film was co-written and directed by Academy Award winner (Forest Gump) Robert Zemeckis.

Ben Is Back (2018) R

What to Watch For: The director of the film, Peter Hedges, was nominated for a screenplay Academy Award for co-writing the 2002 film About a Boy.

Word on the Street: Lucas Hedges is the son of the writer/director of the film, Peter Hedges.

My Take: Hey, you can't go wrong with a film that stars Julia Roberts.

The film opens in Atlanta area theatres on Friday.
