On yesterdays show we tackled the issue of ethnic identity. Should we be called African American, Black, Both, or just American? Today the poll yielded that 35% prefer to be called Black, 26% prefer to be called American, 24% prefer to be called African American, and 15% say that it doesn't matter, Black and African American are interchangeable.
The topic makes us further question if categorizing ourselves has hurt us or helped us as a race? Calling ourselves African American instead of just American could be another form of separate but equal. If we just call ourselves American it could make everything automatically equal.
Have there been any benefits to being identified as African American?
