Mike Bell: "Where's the best fried chicken in town?"

"You men eat your dinner, eat your pork and beans, I eat more chicken any man ever seen"

Willie Dixon wrote it, Howlin' Wolf sang the original and Jim Morrison and the Doors covered it. Back in the day in The South we ate a lot more pork than chicken since it was cheaper and more readily available, Dixon's meaning is that his "Back Door Man" character is getting the good stuff, the married women he's hooking up with are serving him chicken as opposed to the regular pork & beans the husbands get...

Today the Average American eats over 60 pounds of chicken a year. Based on yesterday's Game Winner question the average dude listening to Dukes & Bell eats 60 pounds of fried chicken every month! I know I'm good for at least two servings a week.

I mentioned picking up 8 pieces of fried goodness at Mary Mac's Tea Room on Ponce de Leon Sunday night. And that got us on the subject of fried chicken, which I'm here to tell ya generated a lot more listener interest than talking about the Braves or NBA Finals.

Locally I'm a big fan of The Colonnade on Cheshire Bridge, and I love Greenwood's on Green Street in Roswell. And ya can't beat Busy Bee Café on MLK. Oh yeah can't forget Watershed, I first had their bird in Decatur, now the restaurant is on Peachtree, and they usually sell out of fried chicken on Wednesday nights it's that good.

Truth be told my two favorite fried chicken spots are outside metro Atlanta. While in The Big Easy for the Falcons-Saints game years ago, my buddy Trustee took me to McHardy's Chicken & Fixin' on Broad Street in New Orleans. It's a mostly take out joint in a purple building in the hood and it was amazing.

And I know that nobody will believe me when I say the best fried chicken (for my money & taste buds) on the planet is in... Miami Beach! Yeah I said it!

Yardbird Southern Table & Bar is on Lenox Ave just south of Lincoln Road. Sure it sounds blasphemous saying pretentious South Beach can cook up fried chicken better than here in The Heart of Dixie... but they do.

And for dudes looking for some fried chicken while on a bender in Sin City... they now have Yardbird in Vegas at The Venetian.

We asked listeners for the name of their favorite fried chicken joint, so in no particular order here's what you guys had to say...

  • Colonnade on Cheshire Bridge in Atlanta

Fast food-wise I'm a Popeye's man and in a pinch as y'all know the fried chicken at Publix is always solid. Internationally I had Pollo Campero in Costa Rica on the way to the beach and man is that stuff is tasty. There is one on Buford Highway just North of Druid Hills by the way, homes!

I'm sure there's a few more great spots out there in metro Atlanta we missed... so feel free to add some names to the list with our comments window down below!
