ATLANTA, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) -- Georgia Senator Brandon Beach has tested positive for coronavirus, according to his wife, Shuntel Paille Beach, who posted on Facebook today:
Thank you for all the prayers, texts, calls and offers to help. Brandon and I really appreciate it more than you know. To give you an update, Brandon's symptoms were very much like bronchitis which is what he was originally thought to have. He took a Zpack and steroids and was thought to be on the mend. Symptoms were low grade fever off and on, deep dry cough, aches and lethargic. The fever is gone but the deep cough lingers along with the soreness from coughing. He extended a Press Release yesterday, once we were notified to alert any and all that may have been in contact. The last thing he would want would be for anyone to be infected. We covent your prayers. My prayer for you is that you will use this time for family and stay healthy. God uses us for a reason and my hope is that we can provide encouragement to so many during this stressful time. Please take it seriously.
Beach is the first known state legislator to test positive for the virus. State Senate leaders issued this statement yesterday in response to the diagnosis, recommending other Senate members and employees self-quarantine:
Today, Senate members and staff were notified that a senator had been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), after first experiencing symptoms on March 10. As a result, and based upon the recommendation of the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health Dr. Kathleen Toomey and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Senate members and Senate employees have been asked to self-quarantine for fourteen days. While not a part of the official recommendation to self-quarantine, members of the public who frequent the Capitol should use their best judgment when making a decision to self-quarantine and should contact their primary care provider if they begin to exhibit any symptoms.
State Senator Bruce Thompson confirmed in a Facebook post yesterday he was tested for coronavirus and was waiting for the results. He shared, "Great news is my team of incredible Doctors informed me yesterday that my condition has been upgraded significantly from when I arrived on Monday, and the terms critical & serious no longer apply!!! That means I should move out of ICU in another day or two! Sweet! Many of you have asked if I have the Corona virus, and we don't know yet. My first test a week ago was negative, but we hope to get the results of my second test today."
