Chipper Jones Apologizes For Tweeting Alligators Would Stop Illegal Immigration

ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) -- Atlanta Braves legend Chipper Jones is apologizing for a tweet about illegal immigrants.

The former third baseman joked on Twitter Saturday about how to stop immigrants from Mexico from crossing into the United States.

"Y'all think if they took all them gators they trap in Fla and La and put them in the Rio Grande, it wud [sic] stop the illegals from crossing? Jk [sic]," Jones tweeted.

Jones apologized the next day for the post, which was retweeted more than 2,000 times.

"I realize that my tweet yest [sic] was offensive and distasteful. An attempt at humor was a terrible mistake. Please accept my heartfelt apology!" Jones said.

The eight-time All Star and former National League MVP will be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame on June 28. Jones collected 2,726 hits and 468 home runs during his 19-year career.
