Best Family-Friendly Bike Trails In Atlanta

Atlantans love their bikes. Family bike rides are possible 12 months a year in the Atlanta area and bikers and riders have many options. Bikers can opt for 10-speeds, road, tandem or mountain bikes on the trails in and around Atlanta.  According to, there are more than 6,000 noted bike trails in the metro area of Atlanta. Whether your are hopping on a bike for exercise, exploring or family bonding, you can take in any of these trails and have a great time.
Big Creek Greenway
North Fulton and Forsyth Counties

One of the best bike trails in Georgia is right in North Fulton County. This is a flat and winding trail that totals about 13.5 miles and stretches from Roswell and Alpharetta up to Forsyth County. There are numerous parking spots along the trail, so you can start at either end or in the middle. This flat trail is perfect for kids and along the trail you can stop off at Kimball Bridge for picnic tables and a gazebo or at Big Creek Park. Hiking and running are also allowed on Big Creek Greenway.

One of Atlanta's best neighborhoods boasts the incredible Chastain Park, and you too can enjoy a great bike ride through through all the nooks and crannies of this beautiful park. This park is nature at it's best in a city setting. You will never see the same thing twice as you navigate the 3.7 mile path through the conservancy. There is plenty of parking and it's easily reached from just about any part of the Atlanta metro area. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy Chastain Park and its trails.

Downtown Watkinsville

Downtown Watkinsville is one of the most historic cities in Georgia is a short drive from Atlanta and a great place to take the family out for a bike ride. Here, you can carve out your own little bike patch on a loop around the Downtown area. Enjoy the quaint little shops and restaurants when you stop for a break. Maybe spend a night at one of the top bed and breakfasts anywhere at Ashford Manor. Ride the route of one of the most famous Civil War marches on your bikes. It's both educational and fun for the entire family.

Trolley Line Trail
Atlanta, GA

Another historic trail Trolley Line Trail is where the first trolleys in Atlanta ran way back in 1870. This beautiful trail shows off some of Atlanta's greatness. This trail serves many purposes. It's an urban trail that goes from Georgia State University to Agnes Scott College. It's seven miles in length and constructed well with asphalt and concrete. This is another trail to get the kids on and discuss the history of the largest city in the south.

Families far and wide know about Stone Mountain Park for it's nightly laser show and mountain views of the entire Atlanta area. The five-mile loop around Stone Mountain is on paved roads and is both good exercise and safe for bikers of all ages. On portions of the track, bikers must ride single file and follow all necessary traffic laws. It's a good educational and learning experience for the entire family and a great deal of fun. Make sure you stay and check out the rest of the park or get a hike in after your ride. Stone Mountain Park has it all.
