High Museum

As January approaches, it's natural to start making plans for the coming year. If you are an art lover, then planning to see more art shows is one resolution that will be easy to keep. There are already some great local exhibits scheduled and they are ready to be circled on your calendar.

The High Museum of Art is the preeminent art museum in Atlanta, and the High's "Frida and Diego" brings its international reputation to its full height. "Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting" will feature four "key paintings" by both Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, but will also display over 75 of their lesser-known works. These artists are perhaps two of the most famous Mexican painters and this exhibition of their work will only be shown in the United States at the High Museum from February 14, 2013 through May 12, 2013. Kahlo's imaginative portraits and Rivera's monumental paintings have much to offer excited viewers. This show adds to that with a special chance to explore the connection between these two lovers and masters.

Beep Beep Gallery will be featuring three special shows with three different artists in 2013. The exact exhibition dates have not been set but Shana Robinson, Matt Relkin and Jason Kofke are all scheduled for solo exhibitions. Atlantans might remember Robinson's 2010 show at The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center called "Super Conductor." Her exhibitions include video, paintings and costumes as she thematically tackles "feminine power, natural phenomena, and cycles of life and death." Relkin is an artist who also writes and makes music and Kofke makes conceptually thought-provoking drawings.
