Atlanta Community Food Bank's Annual Hunger Walk Run 5-K Returns On March 6

ATLANTA, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) -- After a two-year virtual hiatus, the Atlanta Community Food Bank's 38th Annual Hunger Walk Run 5-K is happening on Sunday, March 6, 2022, both in-person and virtually.

The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. in the green space at the Home Depot Backyard, next to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The 5-K run starts at 2 p.m.

"It's a beautiful space downtown, a 10-acre park, so it's fully spread out," said ACFB Director of Institutional Giving Cameron Turner.

Online registration has ended, but organizers say you can register at the event. It costs $30 to walk and $40 to run, and it's all for a good cause.

"A hundred percent of the proceeds of this event goes straight into food programs across our region, so it's not just the food bank," said Turner.

The food bank reports just over 700,000 of people were food insecure before the COVID-19 pandemic started in this region. That number skyrocketed to over a million people during the first three months of the pandemic.

Each year, the Hunger Walk Run raises close to a million dollars, providing millions of meals for families. Every dollar donated can provide over 4 meals, and by paying a registration fee, you're providing about 100 meals for neighbors in need.

Those coming out to the event can also enjoy the free activities and live music. "There are activations by the Atlanta Hawks and the Braves. We have circus entertainment there that day. We've got a great kids' zone and a food truck park," Turner said. "We have been truly blessed, by the support of the community, to continue to support this event."
