2014 Lexus GX 450

The GX 460 is the "Middle Child" of Lexus' SUV family….slotted in-between their best-selling RX and the range-topping LX.

If you consider the RX is Lexus' "Soccer Mom's" vehicle of choice, the GX is more Mr. Coach's ride.

It's a beefy, chunky, squared-off design that doesn't try too hard to disguise this machine's capabilities….6,500 lb towing capability….with a 0-60 time of under 8 seconds….and full-time 4-wheel drive.

A 301 HP 4.6 liter V-8 running through a 6-speed automatic makes this performance possible…and results in a 15 city / 20 hwy EPA MPG rating.

7-passenger seating is standard, with a 60/40 split middle row and two fold-flat jump-seats bringing up the rear.

The rear door is not a "swing-up" hatch, but rather, a swing-out door…making rear-access very easy…as long as you remember to leave room behind you to open it. The rear window, however, does swing up…making it quick and easy to toss and go….or carry the occasional 2x4.

The GX 460's Double-wishbone coil spring suspension is, perhaps, one of this vehicle's hidden strengths. If I commuted on a dirt washboard road….or just about any pock-marked, potholed Northern street, I'd like to have something like the GX 460 as my daily-driver. It's suspension feels like it could soak up a missing manhole cover and just keep on going…..with no damage to the vehicle…..or your kidneys.

A base GX 460…if you wanted one, or could even find one, lists at five-bucks under $50K. That'll include 18" alloys, moonroof, 8" touch-screen with backup cam, HD radio with real-time traffic and weather, and a 10-way power front seat.

$800 more will get you a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert and power retracting outer mirrors.

Top it all off with a $4,710 Premium Package and you'll enjoy everything that you've come to expect in a Lexus.....perforated leather headed and cooled front seats, heated outboard second-row seating, mahogany wood trim, rain-sensing wipers, windshield deicer, LED fog lamps, intuitive parking assist, touchscreen NAV with voice-control, Lexus' "Enform" system with destination assist and more.

At 4" longer than Lexus' RX…but 5" shorter than their top-of-the-line LX, the GX 460 can still fit into your garage, yet take you just about anywhere in the world.
