Detroit Dad Pleads Guilty To Murder After 9-Year-Old Accidentally Kills Self With Shotgun

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 45-year-old Detroit man whose 9-year-old son accidentally killed himself with a short-barreled shotgun he found at home has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including murder.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says Christopher Head made his plea Tuesday on charges of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, felon in possession or a firearm, possession of short-barreled shotgun, and felony firearm.

Police have said Head's son Daylen was handling a shotgun in the 6600 block of Barton Street, near Livernois and Tireman, when the weapon went off last November. Head and another child were home at the time.

Prosecutors say the shotgun was unsecured and accessible to Daylen, who shot himself in the head. The boy was a student in nearby Dearborn, although it's unclear why he wasn't at school that day.

Head is due back in court for sentencing on April 27.
