Due Diligence: Ad links Romney to woman's death

August 9, 2012 8:34 AM

A Democratic attack ad unfairly suggests that Mitt Romney is to blame for the death of a woman whose husband's plant was closed by Bain Capital. CBSNews.com's Brian Montopoli points out the flaws in this argument.

I belive the man in this ad. All insurance provided by your job are not the same. She may of had insurance, but that does not mean it covered her like her husbands and if you have two spouses with insurance, you ahve to make a choice. If his was better, the wife would have been on his policy. Going back to hers would have meant she had a pre- existing condition, thus she' out.. Thank God for President Obama who saw the need for Obama care. You should be asmamed Romeny for killing Americans and the american dream.

Makahula....sounds like a sound track of Carl Rove talking points....These tea party folks are obviously spokespersons for those with enormous wealth and power who use the finest propaganda tools for appeal to the racists, bigots, and other ethnocentric wierdo's in our midst. They will warm the hearts of American Jews to further their drive to a huge middle east war.....without regard to the lives of the folks in Israel or our own men and women who serve in our military. Ask this question: Who will suffer and die? Who will reap huge profits?

I think it's an excellent ad. It's about time the Democrats threw the human cost of Republican policies in their faces. They've "played nice," and been too genteel to mention this sort of gorey story, and it's earned them nothing. Romney deserves this and a lot more like it....

The "best" part? ...is that it's true. This isn't an actor; this is an actual man whose wife DIED because of Republican vulture capitalism. It's about time someone stood up and said "Your greed and class warfare kills people."I find it refreshing that we are finally arriving at responsibility and talking about the human cost of business decisions, as opposed to focusing on the latest quarterly profits of XYZ or the most recent tech.not to mention it was A-OK to talk about false "death panels" but not mitte's work. What utter hypocrisy.

Not easy and pretty to look directly at one's own deeds and their consequences, is it ? What is so "enraging" about this ? People lose their jobs as a result of vulture Capitalism. People with no jobs can't afford insurance. People wih no insurance can't afford a doctor and don't go to see one unless and until severely ill. Why is it inconceivable that some of those people end up dying ? WellPoint did this to many citizens when they became severely ill and their insurance policies were dropped, according to Congressional testimony at the time. Does the GOP not remember that they sided with those subhuman fior profit practices of those companies and even APOLOGIZED to them on behalf of a nation offering no such apologies when those CEOs were put on the spot with supposedly too harsh a questioning session or two ?

Yeah, except Mittens didn't leave in 1999 unless he perjured himself when he signed SEC forms stating that he was CEO and sole shareholder of Bain from 1999 through 2001. Why do you think he is withholding his tax returns and why hasn't McCain said anything in Mittens' defense after viewing many years worth of those tax returns in 2008 and while considering Mr. Clean for VP ? Don't kid yourself. The Mittster is but a conduit for the corporations to have their way and they have invested multimillions in broadcasting lies about his abilities in governance as evidenced by his total snafu on that short foreign trip where he managed to anger people everywhere he went. The guy is a disaster and nothing more than the ultimate one percenter elitist puppet. The working middle class will be devastated , salaries will not increase, and benefits will be pared to the bone so guys like Sheldon Adelson can save a few bucks on their taxes.

Has some Flaws? Are to kidding me? The whole ad is a big lie as is Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter who was caught lying on CNN yesterday about having any knowledge of Soptic. In fact in May of this year she had a conference call with him discussing this bogus claim. Unfortunately for her the call was recorded. Maybe CBS News should do their job for once.

Soptic talking to Cutter:

After we lost our jobs, we found out that we were going to lose our health insurance, and that our pensions hadn't been funded like Bain promised they would be. I was lucky to find another job as a custodian in a local school district. They gave me some health insurance, but I couldn't afford to buy it for my wife. A little while later she was diagnosed with lung cancer. I had to put her in a county hospital because she didn't have health care, and when the cancer took her away, all I got was an enormous bill. That put a lot of stress on me: I thought I'd be paying it off until I died myself. That probably wouldn't have happened if Bain kept its promise and I was allowed to keep our health insurance.
