I think if I had seen one of his paintings back then..............my eye would have picked up on that this was some kind of "special"

This portrayal of Van Gogh moved me to tears. He has long been my favorite artist and "Starry Night" my favorite of his paintings. I have been blessed to see many of his works in person. The genius behind them is evident in each one.

One thought came to mind. He was known to have syphilis. Could he have been suffering from the effects of tertiary neurosyphilis?

Sufferers of this condition experience many of the same symptoms as Van Gogh. This stage of the disease manifests itself in symptoms involving the brain and nervous system. Among those are psychosis, hallucinations, delirium, dementia and paranoia. Sufferers may also experience seizures, visual disturbances, or hearing problems among a long list of other symptoms.

It would be interesting to know if there is any conclusive way, today, of discovering what stage of the disease he had at the time of his death.

I too, have the same disease, demons & even the same life style.
I'm very surprised Vincent could paint at all.
If he was alive today. I would ask him. If embryonic stem cells
for his epilepsy would be immoral cure? As his same thoughts of suicide. Excellent story

This is just a great excuse for Morley Safer to make a trip to France in summer. Vincent Van Gogh was insane. He got insane by mixing lead paint with his hands. His paintings are insane. And people who pay hundreds of millions of dollars to own a painting made by him in 45 minutes, instead of sheltering homeless people are? You guessed it. ------ And a society that worships the legend of a guy you wouldn't have spent fifteen minutes talking to on the street when he was actually alive? Right again. ------
