Walker to Romney: Run as reformer, not just Republican

July 14, 2012 12:58 PM

Speaking to reporters Saturday during a meeting of the National Governors Association in Williamsburg, Va., Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to do well, "the R next to his name has to stand for more than just for Republican, it has to stand for reformer."

The best thing Romney could do for the GOP and the country is to reject the current Republican canard that higher taxes kill jobs. I was a Chief Financial Officer for 25 years and I never saw that happen. Also, let's think of just two business men who together have created tens of thousands or maybe even hundreds of jobs: Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. When Bill Gates had Microsoft develop Windows 95 twelve years ago, I can guarantee you that he didn't care what the tax rate was. I can guarantee you the same thing about Steve Jobs when he had Apple develop the iPod, iPhone, and the iPad. Why would they care about taxes their companies would end up paying on those products? They each created enormous value for their shareholders, and since all companies against which they might be measured by investors paid the same tax rates, their companies end up net winners in terms of stock price and capitalized value.

If Mr. Romney could get his party to talk about the real world, and the real role that taxes play in our country's economy, he might stand a chance with uncommitted voters, unless they are dog lovers, not Hispanics, not black, not a union member, and not someone who has ever been laid off or demoted following a corporate change of ownership, or who is an evangelical Christian. No-one in any of those groups will vote for him.

Sorry, Scott, the American people are smart enough to recognize that, for you and Mitt Romney, that "R" doesn't stand for "Reform" or even "Republican"; it stands for the the "Rich" people you serve!

Scott Walker is a bought-and-paid-for tool of the Koch brothers and the Club for Growth. His idea of "reform" is union-busting; trashing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and every other element of our meager safety net; eliminating all regulation; letting corporations do whatever they please; and reducing what used to be the working and middle classes to the very poor.

If you think the Gilded Age of the 1890s was the high point of American civilization, you'll LOVE Scott Walker's "reforms."
