We were just talking about this today at a family dinner party. One of the families child who was not even 5 yet, but in Calif. they can be 5 by Nov., this child's birthday was Oct. 30. He went and had a terrible year and now has been asked to repeat school. I had a daughter whose birthday was end of July and who two older sisters were Sept. birthdays they had been at the head of the class and I wanted that for her so, I redshirted her and she has never let me hear than end of how awful that was for her. So, my last daughter born 10 years later had a July birthday and I let her go and she did great. But, know I have two twin grandsons who were also, premature and so my daughter asked the Kindergarten teachers and they said, "all boys who have birthdays after May should be redshirted they suffer a lot." My daughter had her twin boys redshirt Kindergarten. They went to a fun preschool instead. It has been so, much better for them. I feel that the journalist with her premature son should find a preschool or go to a private Kindergarten that is not and see how he does and then decide next year to go on or go to another Kindergarten.
