Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., offered a "pop" quiz titled "pick out the immigrant" on the House floor Wednesday in response to the Supreme Court decision involving Arizona's "Show Me Your Papers" law. Featuring celebrity contestants including Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, Gutierrez said of Bieber, a Canada native: "When you perform in Phoenix, remember to bring your papers."

I'm more than willing to accept, threejay, that most Arizona police officers are going to do their best to carry out the "papers please" provision of SB 1070 without racial profiling. (If I remember correctly, most Arizona police chiefs strongly opposed that provision, precisely because they didn't want their officers to be forced to make those kinds of decisions! Sheriff Joe Arpaio was, of course, the exception.)

But the point that most defenders of the Arizona law don't seem to be able to comprehend is that Arizona has far more Mexican-American CITIZENS than Mexican-American undocumented people. And no, I'm not talking about what the anti-immigration folks call "anchor babies." I'm talking about Mexican-American citizens whose families have lived in that area for generations, many since before Arizona became a state in 1912 or, even earlier, before it became a U.S. territory. Those long-time residents probably don't carry their birth certificates around with them -- any more than you or I do...and why should they have to? That's MY issue with "papers please": the likelihood that, despite the best efforts of police officers, long-time citizens will face inappropriate challenges.

You are right Mr Gutierrez, we do judge people by their actions, and your actions today show your extreme lack of intelligence. You are not a trained police officer. Your slander of our officers and your slander of the great state of Arizona - one of the UNITED states is unbecoming your office. RESIGN. Police officers are TRAINED to NOT look the aspects you point out in the first 5 minutes of their training. (It might be hard to imagine, but people whose only ID is from another country, might ought to have their immigration status checked.) Maybe you should take FIVE minutes to read the law before you launch a completely nonsensical and entirely partisan attack. But after Five whole minutes, you would understand - and then you would support Arizona, the supreme court, the constitution, and the rule of law.
