Hi, Diego. Any news? Did you follow the saga of Barbero? He broke his hind leg! I don't think that's ever happened in Racing before. Front legs, unfortunately, are broken infrequently, a thigh has ever been broken before! His 'trainer' had his hind shoes super-glued on, after he threw a shoe in the race before his fatal bid. Have you seen the Super Glue commercial where the guy Super Glues his hard hat to the ceiling? The bond it created on the shoe was stronger than the thigh bone.

Dear Diego, I'd love to see a segment on 60 Minutes regarding equestrian sports and helmets. Are there plans for a show like this? Who would I need to contact regarding same? Thanks. --- Lillian

To begin (from an experienced horseman and writer), EVERY non-western 'horse-sport' is a supposed 'Sport of Kings'...from racing to show-jumping and dressage. Some involve more skill, refinement and humanity than others to create 'beauty' and 'exhilaration' in the fantasy centaur-like performance. The sobering truth is that the lives of most polo ponies and their rider are of the utmost 'brusque', 'barbarous', and 'unrefined'. Absolutely torturous to many polo ponies...and the riders are almost debilitatingly mono-depressing until the end of the show or match or race. Riding a retired polo pony is usually a most unpleasant experience. Their mouths are hardened - extremely heavy in the hand, roached manes that don't return, and they are disposed of like candy wrappers when their injuries compile...they are sold for dog food, glue, and worse. It is so sickeningly disheartening what happens to many of them...just like old male fashion models who fail to shine again in any other line of work...

Dear Lillian,
I'm sorry about your injury and I hope you fully recovered. there are studies for Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI and equestrian disciplines are the highest amongst any other sport including football, motorcycles and more. Manufactures have their helmets tested last couple of years and they come with the conclusion that they have couple of approved helmets after the testing such as Casablanca C6 & Falcon FFA US Polo Assoc.highly recommends that polo participants wear NOCSAE-approved helmets. USPA is working on proactive prevention of injuries. the difficult part is comliance by players.

Hi. My name is Lillian Heller, and besides looking forward to the story on Nacho Figueras and Polo, I'd like to see a story about Helmet Safety for everyone involved with horses. My accident was September 25, 2005, on the track at the San Diego Polo Club. I was in a coma for 32 days. I've been treated in two hospitals, and finished the rehab program in the last one. I was wearing a 'Lexington' Helmet at the time. It's due for redesign, as even when fastened properly with the harness, as mine was, I still got Traumatic Brain Injury. The 'Argentine-Style' Polo Helmet is not crash-tested, or rated. They're not safe! Please Google: Lillian Heller Polo San Diego. Thanks. I'm looking forward to the show.
