Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law student thrust into the national spotlight when radio host Rush Limbaugh called her a "slut" and a "prostitute" for pushing for greater access to contraceptive coverage, sat down for an extended interview with CBS News Friday to respond to the remarks.

Rush Limbaugh is an intemperate entertainer who is like a bull in a china shop when it comes to getting across his point. Ignore him. Focus on Ms. Fluke. She is a delightful young woman; very articulate; and profoundly intelligent and guided. I do have one question that I think ought to be addressed:

In this interview on CBS News Friday, she is asked the following (at 2:02): "Rush Limbaugh -- he essentially said that you want to get paid for having sex."

SANDRA FLUKE: "Yeah. It seems to be a misconception, doesn't it? Seems to be some confusion there. So we're not asking anyone to pay for anything, actually. This is about private insurance coverage. As a student our insurance is entirely paid for by students, not even by our universities. For employers, it's still a private plan; this isn't about the government paying for anything, taxpayers paying for anything, certainly no political commentators paying for anything. So, yeah, it seems to be a severe mischaracterization of the situation."

This she says after telling CBS viewers that the President had called her to thank her for amplifying "the voices of women across the country who are very concerned about some of the very dangerous bills that we've seen and their support for the contraception policy and how much it means to them." Ms. Fluke mentions the federal contraception policy many times in the 3-minute, 23-second excerpt of the interview.

What, pray tell, is the federal contraceptive policy concerning private insurance coverage for contraceptives that millions of American women have been very concerned about? Why was Ms. Fluke testifying in Congress about private insurance coverage for contraceptives?

It is simply inexplicable and completely unacceptable that a grown man, supposedly one with a moral upbringing, would stoop to calling a brave young woman such horrible names over a disagreement about her stance on contraception. An area no man has any "right" to criticize women in anyway. When Rush can get pregnant, he can have an opinion, until then, leave decisions on women's reproductive life to them. He brings new meaning to the term "ugly American" with his hateful rhetoric.
