Extra: Police commissioner: Gilbert likely drowned

December 16, 2011 4:02 PM

December 2011: In his only one-on-one TV interview, then-Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer shoots down the idea that Shannan Gilbert is a victim of a serial killer. In fact, he tells "48 Hours'" Erin Moriarty that doesn't even believe she was murdered.

Was Shannan Gilbert a victim of the Long Island serial killer?

The Commish seems so un-concerned about the crime committed. Looks like he just wants to explain things away as if her death was "no-big-deal" kind of thing...... I bet if it were his own daughter found dead in the same location.......He would not stop until he found out every detail about her death.......

Unbelievable. The commissioner thinks she may have gone for a dip? After calling 911 hysterically? He thinks her jeans may have come off from running in the brush? Please. Do you know how hard it is to get jeans on and off, buddy? This is horrible. I will continue to pray for Shannan's family to have justice - and that the jerks who are responsible will PAY DEARLY and for an excruciating long time. She said, "THEY are trying to kill me!" Someone on the PD has got to solve this case. It just takes ONE person to talk, and all the pieces start fitting together.

The serial killer most likely work for the police force, or connected in some way. This is the first time I found out a commissioner ike Dormer actually existed. Does everybody in NY know? Or just the people that had met/work with him?
I would think that they would have caught the murderer at some point, if it weren't for their sloppiness in the job of waiting a year after a body has been found. This is evidence of how retarded dormer is.
Dormer has no passion in doing this, evident from purposely allowing the trail to grow cold in the case
Dormer did not dispatched a police after hearing a cry for help because the woman was a prostitute. Which wouldve save the girl, and probably at some point, catch the murderer.
The Murderer is pratically, even right now, laughing at the police department, while he is still killing people.
Dormer does not consider prostitutes to be less than human. Because of how he works, he is actually SUPPORTING the murderer, and possibly, if anybody ciminal know this, spring more criminals to attack prostitutes.
This is why he should be fire. For retarded-ness
Dormer will not, and never, by all mean, be able to solve this case. And if he did, then I would doubt it would be him to solve it.

If one thinks that targeting prostitutes is a safe bet, one should look at the case of Robert Pickton, the pig supplier, in Vancouver, BC. Killed prostitutes for years by plying them with alcohol and drugs. Many were poor and or native American women. Cops seemingly looked the other way for years UNTIL mothers and other relatives got together and (made a stink). I suspect that in this case, too, the police know something, and may be laying the trap to make sure they can put away the perps.

That Commissioner is covering up something. How dare he say that her clothes came off because she was running through the brush. How dare he say her clothes came off because she was hysterical. Why did he wait a year to search that area. It is not hard to search a marsh area. I hope he can sleep well at night.

Was the Commissioner in charge of the Warren Commission and supporter of the Single Bullet Theory? If it turns out to be murder he should be fired right away for being a total incompetent. If he didn't want to confirm she was murdered fine then just say No comment at this time. Yeah someone dies of an accidental death with their clothes and belongings in one spot & their body in another where 10 other murder victims coincidentally were found. Sure that's the ticket.

However Shannan died, it is a very sad story. I feel for her family. I pray that they are able to get through this difficult time. I hope they are able to find out for sure what really happened to her, and not have to wonder. As far as the confirmed victims of the serial killer, I hope this will discourage young women from turning to prostitution. I know times get hard, but there are so many other ways to survive.

I believe this serial killer is someone who is wealthy and very attractive to women. I believe he has inside information of how the department of New York City works and Long Island location. If police is not taking seriously he must have collaboration from someone in there. Regardless of what victims do for living, this psycho is picking up prostitutes who are trash to most men and who think that these type of women are not worth it to investigate. Who knows if can be your daughter next time, one day this killer can turn around for travel teenager kids or women who are in financial struggle. I think he has a very good knowledge of how police department works to trace phone calls. etc. I think he is being help by others to perfectly commit these murders without leaving any traces.
