This is a very brave and strong minded young woman who is not affected by the usual teen age peer pressure. I hope that this family finds a way to get a better home, and a way to live better quality of life. They have a lot of courage and fortitude and deserve better than what they have now.

I have seen this before on a daily basis when I was a teacher a couple of decades ago. The difference between now and then is devotion to service as a community and profession member. Today, the hero is the greedy smart mouth who demeans the less fortunate and never helps those with less to live. When I hear Paul Ryan, when I watch the Republican Primaries, I see the cult of greed and selfishness codified and sanctified by their own type of religious leaders. The religion of greed and selfishness tries to replace the religions of compassion and charity. Dark is called light and light is called dark.

Thanks for the post. Keep sharing the stories of those who need help. Only when all live in a safe home, with food and clothing and healthcare --only then would I recommend you stop sharing such stories.

Here is where you can help:

The group I mentioned below is called 'Pathways to Home'. They are a collaborative of 18 partner agencies in Seminole County that are working together to help homeless families with children. They provide the soup-to-nuts services, conseling, and direct help these families need to stay housed and together.

CBS news' comments sections won't allow me to post the direct URL, but they are at www(dot)pathwaystohome(dot)org

They'll get the most from your donations, and will get the help to the families that need it.

Wanting to send money to this one family is an admirable desire, but there are so many families that need this help here in Seminole County. To me, singling out one family seems unfair to all the children and families who were not fortunate enough to be featured on 60 Minutes. There are far too many kids who are in this situation, we cannot ignore them as well.

After the first bit on 60 minutes, a non-profit group of community providers was put together to meet this need, and they have had some really great sucesses, but there is so little money and so many people in need. The families that were on the show are representative of diverse group of children, all worthy of and desperately needing help to keep them off the streets. Its not a matter of sending one family a check and everything gets better. This is a big problem that needs big solutions. There are people on the ground here in Florida who know how to maximize the help you all want to give, and can get this fixed.

If their deceased mom had worked and had any substantial earnings, Dad and the kids are eligible for Social Security. Please make sure that they get to the Social Security Office and apply immediately for benefits. They could be missing out on a substantial income stream.

I would very much like to help this family. Please help me to help them. I am going to try and reach Beth Doblos at the Seminole County Schools system tomorrow and see if she can find them. The school system phone number is: 320-0000 and Beth is the Homeless Child Specialist (can't believe there is such a job title). I don't want to give to her fund though because I want to make sure that every penny I give goes straight to the Metzgers, so I am going to try to set up a PO Box for them through a post office near their school. That way, I can send things to them and know that they will get them.
