My father grew up in the Great Depression. His father die when he was about 16 years old and he quit high school to go to work to help support his mother and siblings. His father had been at one time a college professor. I came of age during the brutal recession of the early seventies. I chose utility work because of that experience. It is very dependable and I have never been out work. I have kept my daughter and grandchildren off of the streets during this latest depression. The more things change the more they stay the same. Family relationships are very important. Those with strong family ties fare better during hard times than those without them.

Would like to know how to help these families. Where can we donate money that will directly go to them?

Ok, this is off base with the story, but seems like we keep blaming the government for all the problems.

First of all, congress and Obama are not the ones getting the young girls pregnant, not married, not gonna be married.
Go down to the Child Support office one day and see how many come in to collect their monthly check. 250-300 for each kid, add 5-6-7 kids to that paycheck and anyone can live off the government.

if Congress would pass a law, that if you keep having kids, and stay on welfare, then you need to either be castrated, or tubes tied. How many times have you seen someone who has a child, and the first thing they say is , you can go down and get on medicad as soon as you have the baby. well, after 6-7-9,,, ,how many more will grandma, and great grandma have to raise. This is all over, and it will continue to happen if someone doesnt start stopping the overpopulation..

Ok, angelelina,,, show us your American pride. We all go see your movies, we support your lifestyle, so lets see some tax write offs for you and Brad.
Start supporting your own Country, who supports you.
Not only you and brad, but all the superstars, athletes, politicians, and big bankers.... Get off your millions that you have raped the citizens of.

This was an eye opening report for me. It is ironic that folks in US are facing the same challenge as some third world country and we are supporting cause in that part of the world while missing our own neighbors. My prayers for the families and especially the children to keep up the good spirit and not fall in the dark. Most of them were appearing very smart and motivated to get out of the situation - keeping the positive attitude. God Bless them, their parents and God bless USA.

I raise my hat to CBS and Scott Pelley. This report is a shocker. How sad! It must have been exceptionally hard for you to keep your composure in front of those kids.
I am very worried that the cuts some politicians in Washington want to make in Social Security may hurt these kids even more.
I now watch the CBS Evening News every evening.

I grew up in a fabulous home but I never had a warm hug but instead hate was thrown at me by my stepdad and Mom was just his complice. This was worse then any material poverty and today I'm still in pain from the memories I have as unfortunately I loved my Mom and wanted her to love me back.
