A visit to the Vatican Library

April 10, 2011 12:47 PM

No one is allowed to borrow from the Vatican Library, except the pope. And no wonder: the archive holds some of the oldest and most precious works of art and treasure known to man. Morley Safer gets to see the best of the best.

A rare look at the Vatican Library's treasures

One of the most interesting collections in the Vatican library was not mentioned - its collection of Jewish materials. Reportedly, these include materials taken from the temple in Jerusalem, as well as many Biblical and Rabbinic treasures. Secret as the overall library is, this portion is the most secret and most guarded.

You are SO lucky! What an honor to see and touch such stuff. If I ever make it there tell them I am a scholar! Awesome!

Good presentation.
However, the Vatican has a long history of oppressing thought, opinion, and policy.
The priests that came with the conquista destroyed many cultures and created many half breeds with class struggles that is promenent in Latin America along with forced baptisms of Jews in Spain. They destroyed the ancient history of the Maya with mass burnings.
And then the diseases they brought along with the rats, destroyed the Aztec civilization.

One of your interviwees read in English from an old Bible. The verse he read was John 1:1 and he said the following words "..and the Word was God". If you would refer to any interlinear translation of the Greek text into English it becomes clear that those words should be rendered "...and the word was a God [or divine]". This knocks the props out of belief in the Trinity which is one of the mainstays of the Catholic religion. And they must have hundreds of copies of the Bible in that library to verify what I am saying. What does that say about the history of the Church?
