Homeless kids: the hard times generation

June 23, 2011 11:04 AM

For some children, socializing and learning in school are being cruelly complicated by homelessness, as Scott Pelley reports from Florida, where school buses now stop at budget motels for children who've lost their homes. Sunday, June 26, 7 p.m. ET/PT.

I saw the show, and like others, it broke my heart and shocked me. Why aren't there food pantries in that county that can provide meals for these kids and their families? The Orlando area not only has upscale subdivisions to collect from, but I would bet hotels (especially Disney) would gladly contribute to feed children! I hope the airing of this has changed things. And shame on the US, for helping Iraqi children, Libyans, Afghanis, and Haitians, but leaving our own children in this kind of state. A disgrace to our false image as a nation of 'brotherly love' and 'christian values'.

Three years ago I noticed a huge increase in homeless children in my area. The reason? An influx of alien labor taking the construction jobs of the children's fathers. After the father loses his job, the mother cannot get benefits like food stamp cards and free lunches unless she divorces him.

So as time goes by, the family splits up. The mother and the children move in with family. Often this does not work out, and the children wind up in foster care. \\

I wish all the people who think we should let in all these foreigners had to spend time listening to these children tell about their lives being turned upside down when their father loses his job roofing or building.

Your program on the children with no homes was very touching.Especially in a nation with over 11 Billion illegal aliens whicfh costs this country Billions and Billions of dollars everywhere in health benefits, education and other benefits. This money could be used for these children outlined in your 60 minutes story. How does this fit in the equation? It is apparent that these Billions could be spent on these poor Americans who are homeless. Why doesen't 60 Minutes do a story on this.

What can we do to help these children? Everyone needs to see this story! Especially the people who are responsible for this financial disaster. Why are stories like this not shared on local the news station?

This was the saddest story I've seen. How can this happen in our great country for children to go hungry and have to live in cars and motels? The government deals out money like water--paying for "shrimp on a treadmill" study, among other foolish projects, paying out money to other countries that hate us!! Something is terribly wrong with our leaders.

we live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA . Why are we hungry and homeless. I see these children everyday moved around like cattle. It is time for the government to set some new guidelines to fix this problem . They shouldn't be take our funds and helping others . They need to stay true to their own. Everyone with no income should have food stamps to feed American people, not the ones that come here from other countries using our money. Bring our soldiers home and the our children. Maybe people should have to show receipts for buying food instead of drugs and selling the food stamp cards.

My heart ached for those famililes - the kids and the parents. We are living in surreal times - people's jobs, homes, lives, swept out from under them. Thank you for sharing this tremendous story!

The day is 8/26/2011 Referring to the homeless kid in Florida by Scott Pelley, I have but one question: Why the parents and children were not asked " who do you feel is responsible for the situation you are in, Nafta, congress, or Wall Street?
