I am a 30 year teacher. I have 3 bachelor degrees, 2 master degrees. Before I quit attending college, I would have qualified for 3 more master degrees. Why did I quit the graduate college? Because the college that I was attending was not providing me with the skills that I needed to be truly effective in the degree choices. I lacked 6 and less credits per program. I was carrying a 4.0 at that time for all graduate work and I earned it. I love learning, I love teaching.
I could have done something else, actually resisted being a teacher, but was just drawn to it. That is the difference between a great teacher and a person working for a system. I am sure Mr. Gates, you find the same type of passion in your field. Of course we won't talk about what your fantastic people earn verses a classroom teacher. That would be depressing.
So, where is the problem? I tell you sir, not with the born to be teachers, but with the colleges that let incompetent people through the education program and with the board that certifies them. I shutter when I see the caliber of some of the student teachers. They don't want to work above what is required, let alone what needs to be done in a timely method.
I witnessed cheating from coaches working on masters in administration, and having others write their papers. The colleges seem to have a blind eye to this. So use your clout to go after the colleges to toughen their expectations.
My lower level degrees were from an excellent college. I felt well prepared, was monitored closely and had a wonderful experience, so I know there are excellent schools out there. Oh, these cheating lazy administrators are now the ones lobbying to be able to fire excellent teachers because they stand up to the administrator's corrupt practices. The principals like to call it insubordination.
