Extra: Assange stays on the move

January 30, 2011 5:00 PM

Before being placed under house arrest in Great Britain, Julian Assange lived what could be described as a nomadic lifestyle. He explains to Steve Kroft why he was always on the move.

Assange's appearance on CBS's "60 Minutes" with Steve Croft is a profound, embarrassing tragedy for America's "liberal" media.

How embarrassing is it that an Australian - an Australian! - has to explain to an member of America's "free" press that it's a proper duty of the press to inform "the people" about what the government is doing in their name and with their tax dollars?

How embarrassed must Steve Croft be at having Assange vividly remind him what REAL journalism is, as opposed to the corporate/state-speak we get from America's "mainstream media?"

How embarrassing it must be for Croft to feel he has to raise a politically correct, skeptical eyebrow when suggesting Assange might be a bit too 'paranoid and conspiracy-minded' for believing governments lie to their citizens?

In a just society, the free press would be truly free and Assange would have Croft's job. But given the 1984-like society we actually live in, we should be thankful - and I, for one, am - that we're permitted even this small glimpse of the truth that "60 Minutes" has allowed us.

Steve Kroft, I am very disappointed in this interview. It was as if you were sticking to a pre-written script and your management told you to "stay on the reservation." The Free Press is the check and balance on government and corporations. I once counted 60 Minutes (and CBS news reporting, in general) among the Free Press. Clearly, 60 Minutes has become a mouthpiece of the establishment - corporations/government...oh, but wait, CBS IS a corporation....how could we expect you to act as a member of the Free Press? I think many Americans long for a Free Press.

I hope there are more people like Julian.

The World is now controlled by a bunch of corrupted, self serving, money hungry and power gungry people and organisations.

They must be exposed.

Julian is a World hero.

Julia, I'm one of the many Americans that believe from the depth of my heart that what you are doing is better for the people of the world and that you are our 21st century hero and deserve a Nobel Peace Price for your courage to expose the abuse and curruption of governments around the world and for trying to bring peace and clean democracy around the world. Most Americans unfortunately are programmed by the media and don't take the time to research politics on their own - they let media tell them what to think, i.e. that's why we have the War on Drugs. With your help, the world will become a better place where governments represent the needs of the people instead of dictating down to the people. American constitution is no longer upheld in courts - we need a revolution to clean up all the legislative wrong doing and curruption, government overspending and dictatorship. I am deeply concerned with USA as a superpower as the president of USA has dangerously way too much power. Americans don't trust their government anymore - our government doesn't represent our needs - they don't listen to the people rather dictate their personal believes down - we don't have democracy we have a growing government that looks more like communism.

I and many of my friends are praying for your protection, and for the protection of your staff and colleagues. We also pray that the truth be upheld, and that the lies be exposed. I do hope with all my heart that Ms. Palin and others like her...the entire Fox News corporation!...will be taken to trial for their part in inciting violence. I hope it will happen sooner than later, but I also know that many people are still trying to bring certain American politicians to justice after many years of effort. My greatest hope is that we are finally reaching a tipping point in this country, and in fact around the globe, from which people will be directed to seek truth, justice and true freedom from oppression of all kinds! Thank you for your work, from the bottom of my heart! May God protect you!!!

I assume you are reading these comments Mr.Assange, so here is mine.
Born in 1942 in Germany, I inherited a legacy of crimes against humanity and supported the Nuremberg trials for those crimes. If the Germans had had a conduit like yours then who knows what would have happened.
Wrong doings must be exposed no matter how and where!
To me you came across as knowledgeable, confident, and determined to continue to do what needs to be done. What happens to you is rather a watershed. May you be successful in all your future endeavors. With well wishes thank you.

I was disappointed in Steve's Interviewing manner. He is capable of better than that. You would have a hard time convincing me he was playing the "Devils Advocate" I like Julian and what he is attempting to do.My hat goes off to this young fella
