As a follow up to my previous comment. Here's a bright idea, sell the rights to the kid, and have whatever money that he would get get used to pay off the people he stole from (like the $15k). If there's any left over, well he's not going to be in jail forever.
Having his dead beat mother profit is just about the worst thing that could happen.

So, the mother basically ruins his childhood by not providing for him, is a key factor in what drove him to this life of crime. (Not excusing stealing the money and all that other stuff, but it wasn't like the kid had a home to return to), and now she might profit off of his story?
Sickening.

I think this kid is amazing and very bright. It saddens me to think that he will face many years behind bars, with the kind of life he lived as a child he never resorted to drugs or violence.Sure what he did wasn't right but he didn't harm anyone physically ,he was no real threat just doing what he had to do to survive.I love the fact that he loved animals shows a really good hearted person. There are people who kill or rape or do horrific crimes and get less jail time.I think he needs help but they shouldn't give hime jail time.More like counseling and maybe one day he can become a great pilot.GOOD LUCK COLTON :)

I find it sad that a child makes choice's like this because of low life parents who cared nothing about him, I know it may not be an excuse for what he did but in his own way he was looking for something. The mother is the one who needs to be locked up, that is where the abuse/crime is. I am sure there are many children out there who turn to crime in some way because of the lousy parents they have.

Oh c'mon !! this kid needs rehab, not to be locked up. He's a very brilliant kid no doubt. He had it very rough growing up,,there's no role model in his life. He hasn't hurt anyone physically. It would be a shame if he's put behind bars. I pray he gets the education he so deserves. "Best o'Luck Colton !!!!"

PS. I am a huge fan of 48 Hours and from watching these mystery episodes made me wondering are Caucasian people very evil ?? Does CBS only focus on the white race crime-mysteries ?? I thought I was alone but thank goodness someone commented on this. Thanks for making that comment.

PS - Like another writer pointed out, maybe we could have some shows about people who are not white and middle class. What about giving some time to the Native Americans/Blacks/Hispanics etc in the country who also struggle with terrible crimes either done to them or around them. C'mon 48 hours, what do you say? What about Leonard Pelletier, or some of the crimes in Indian country? Something from the Black community?
