Extra: "Top Gear" in Alabama

October 24, 2010 5:00 PM

What happens if you scrawl offensive messages on your cars and drive through Alabama? The cast of "Top Gear" recalls how they aroused the fury of locals and how the situation got very ugly, very fast.

As a person with a half a brain, this is ludicrous. The Top Gear crew are blatantly lying. When the "rednecks" (who, amongst their number, count 2 Hispanic men, a Hispanic girl, a teenage white girl, and a teenage boy) supposedly throw rocks at the camera crew they can clearly be seen on-camera sitting in the back of the truck. First off, it's going to be hard to chuck rocks sitting down in the back of a pickup truck. Second, if they got out of the truck in the split second before the rocks start being thrown, where did they get them in the middle of a paved parking lot? And why were the police not called? And how, since Clarkson was near out of petrol when they pulled in and James was in a piece of junk car, did they elude pursuit of a V8-powered Dodge Ram for two hours, not to mention never get a single shot of the pursuers?

It's funny that the point of this was to portray the Alabamians as backward and bigoted and yet the means they use to do so is by staging a complete fakery based completely on stereotypes.

60 Minutes: you should be ashamed, not only for falling for this ridiculous forgery of an event but not even to question it when there's concrete evidence as well as a complete lack of logic. Pathetic really.

Being pelted with rocks and chased in a pickup truck is assault if not attempted murder. A person can be killed by rocks, (remember Biblical stories of stonings). I would say despite what is written on a vehicle, that these Brits, if carrying guns, could have justifiably shot and killed the Alabama Rednecks in self defense. Especially since they were being chased. This proves that the Brits were trying to retreat. Rocks thrown are proof of intent to physically harm or kill. I wouldn't have hestitated to fire warning shots at the Rednecks, or tried to shoot their tires and windshield out and then if they kept coming, I would have shot to kill in self defense.

As an Alabama resident I would be shocked if you weren't challenge for your anti-social behaviour. If you don't like confrontation stay out of our face. I don't get it. You taunt somebody and then are appalled if they offer to slap the taste out of you mouth. Go figure!

This is hilarious fun. But, to be fair guys, yes Alabama has rednecks but so does England. English necks are not quite so red because they live where the sun don't shine. On your next misadventure, try running through Liverpool with "Chesty Men United for Manchester United" affixed to your car and see where that gets you. Chortle!

As an Alabama resident and native son (and Top Gear viewer), I am also ashamed of the behavior of some of my fellow citizens. I offer no defense for the actions of a backwards few, but I am not particularly shocked or surprised by it. Alabama, like many southern states is a composition of progressive urban enclaves and ultra-conservative rural dogmatism. Hanging a pork chop around your neck and walking into a dog fight should certainly create a stir, especially in south Alabama. The Florida license plates probably didn't help much either.
