Optical Illusion on Road for Safety
September 9, 2010 10:48 AM
Officials in Vancouver, British Columbia have placed an optical illusion on the ground meant to slow down fast drivers. As you drive up, the hologram takes shape into a girl who's chased her ball into traffic. It's part of a pilot project encouraging drivers to observe the school speed limit. Gary Hamilton reports.

- Best thing is teach the brats to look where they way, and not leave it up to the rest of us.

- i do not think it is a good idea. drivers will get used to the illusion and start ignoring it. one day a child will really be in the street and will get hit because someone will think it also is an illusion.

- I think it will have the reverse action; just like "ghost" cop cars parked on corners - soon drivers realize they are empty/parked, just like drivers will soon acclimatized to driving over "illusions" which could very well be a child. Stick to the international symbols that drivers know, and quit hiring artists to solve problems.

- Do you remember the story of the boy who cried 'wolf?' How long will it be before someone drives over a real kid because they thought it was an image?

- All we need is for some startled speeding driver to swerve into the on ccming traffic lane and have a high speed head-on collision with an innocent driver. I can see the lawsuits flying now!

- Neat idea. I hope it is effective. Only thing wrong with the story is the description of the picture. It's not a hologram. It's an example of anamorphic artwork.
