Preview: Cyber War

June 10, 2010 12:16 PM

Could hackers get into the computer systems that run crucial elements of the world's infrastructure, such as the power grids, water works or even a nation's military arsenal, to create havoc? They already have. Steve Kroft reports, Sunday, June 13 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

At what ever level of truth is the state of the art of our electrical grid subject to hackers, this is the cyber view of the Gulf oil spill paralyzing our country in comparable ways.

The inability of the government to force private companies to put people and country welfare above corporate welfare is today's poison leading into tomorrow's world wide calamity. Should this happen in the next several years it will probably be deemed Obama's death when the truth is this paralysis of corporations to be accountable to the country and the people has been a long standing problem in this so called democratic form of government. Heaven help us .. nothing else can! Stupidity is what stupidity wants. The joke will be on all of us who allow our lives to be so controlled by corporate America.

Admiral Mike McConnell, interviewed in this 60 Minutes piece, is not what I would call a reliable source.

We have seen how McConnell lied to Congress when he was head of the NSA. During the debate over the FISA act, he claimed falsely (and with much dramatic flair---tears welled up in his eyes) that an American soldier lost his life in Iraq due to inadequacies of the current warrant requirements. But the timeline of the event proved that this story was completely made up. McConnell was trying to justify his agencies' further and unprecedented intrusion into private conversations between American citizens without warrants.

Now McConnell is president of Booz Allen Hamilton, the secretive private company with close contacts to the CIA (many believe that Booz Allen Hamilton is simply a CIA cover agency). And Booz Allen Hamilton has much to gain from investigating cyber security threats, which is no doubt a large portion of their business.

I certainly believe that cyber attacks are a serious threat to our security. But considering McConnell's penchant for bending the truth to suit his means (as well as his company's huge vested interest), I would not take everything he claims regarding the threat at face value.

60 Minutes should have disclosed to its viewers McConnell's controversial tenure at NSA, as well as the fact that in his current position he stands to benefit greatly from stirring up fears of cyber threats.

Why was THIS question never asked ?

What's the influence of Microsoft and Windows ?

Notorious for getting hacked, yes ?

.

Know this for fact ...

Around 2005 - after Bush Admin. gave Microsoft a "free pass" on the Monopoly Conviction - Microsoft, in quest to keep the World from adopting UNIX/Linux as their OS of choice, GAVE AWAY FOR FREE the API's (the 'keys to inner sanctum' of an OS) and other "secret code" needed to protect the OS from hackers, to China and Russia.

Why has THAT never been widely reported ?

And why was it not even mentioned in this 60 Minutes Report tonight ?

Was this "give away" done with "blessing" of US Gov. at the time ?

Isn't that a "treasonable act" - giving National Security Technology to Foreign Nations ?
.

Some fundamental, and obvious, questions are not getting asked.

I have been in technology for 20+ years. Security has been one of my strong points and it is to bad that 60 minutes has bought into this cyber war issues. Of course there are attacks and we have known it from the 60s. Again it is because we reactionist. This is all preventable and it is lazy complacent government and private sectors that I blame for the breach of security. And this moron that says everything needs to be reconciled its called online backups. And if you think there are any over rides for these mechanical devices your nuts. And to bad you sit there and say "So what is the reality of this...?" Give me a break. You have obviously setup this show as to shock the people that are watching. The only thing your main guest said was what we have known about this country for decades when it comes to protecting our people here at home. We React when something bad happens instead of being proactive and holding those, government or private accountable for their laziness. Security breach, immigration, MTR (mountain top removal), FEMA (more like (Give me a break), Oil spills, All of these issues I have listed have been reactionary topics to our public servants and private sector. Good Luck Dan

Renegade112, the media is not saying anything that isn't already being done. That's the point of the story. If you think that 60 Minutes suddenly fed criminals a new idea, you're moron.

They could... and they will.... thanks to the media putting ideas in the heads of Hackers. I guess the media thinks they are doing a service by bringing such issues to the forfront... when in reality it brings the hackers out of the wood work... and as anyone knows that works in the computer world.... hackers mainly hack into systems just to see if they can do it... once they breach someones network.. and it leaks out that it can be done... or "How" its actually done... then the criminal element comes into play.... the terror element comes into play. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to matters such as these. Shame on the media for revealing such things... Ive never able to get over how you do it and sleep sound at night.

In other developing countries...yes. In countries that are up to speed, you would either have to physically be present or in the building next door. Otherwise, it's highly unlikely you will be infiltrating anything other than a dummy bot computer.
