I challenge The Tea Party people to take a civility pledge similar to that of The Coffee Party. Here is The Coffee Party pledge--

As a member or supporter of the Coffee Party, I pledge to conduct myself in a way that is civil, honest, and respectful toward people with whom I disagree. I value people from different cultures, I value people with different ideas, and I value and cherish the democratic process.

I don't think Alan did a very good job of saying what the Coffee Party is about. And Meckler sounded like he wanted to become a Coffee Party member. The Coffee Party is primarily opposed to Obstructionism in government and is for cooperation and civil conversation. Coffee partiers believe that government has a role in the solution to society's problems as opposed to the Tea Party's belief that the solution is simply less government. Coffee partiers want government to work whereas Tea Partiers just want less government. Both groups say they are open to all persuasions but the Tea Party is dominated by extreme right wingers and is being courted by neo-cons and republicans. It is yet to be determined where the Coffee Party will fit in, but their objective of creating cooperation and conversation would require that they not fall into either extreme.

Yesterday, I went to an exhibition of American art at LACMA. According to the information at the exhibit, the people supporting the American Revolution boycotted tea party - since they associated tea with the British.

So all I can say to the Tea Party Movement is simple. Real patriots drink coffee.
