What is so incredible is not just Derek's phenomenal piano skill but what appears to be a comparable friendly demeanor. He loves people. If we cannot commit to practicing the piano we should at least strive to be nicer to each other. Derek role-models this all the time!

Derek is truly a gift to the world. Music is the language of the universe and my, what a beautiful person he is. Thank you 60 Minutes for this awesome report! It moved my whole family. We ALL have something special to do with our lives regardless of our circumstances. I wish everyone had seen this. Please run it again in the future! So inspiring in this day and age. Thanks again!

The story about Derek renews my faith in God. Derek was meant to have the life he has so that he can be an inspiration to millions and he was blessed with the parents and teacher he has so that he can fulfill that goal. It reminds me that we may not understand the reasons for why things happen, but inevitably there is a higher purpose.

Derek is great but I created an account to say to Luci (above), good way to turn a good feature about someone into what 60 minutes should do. I don't see you running for President. Why don;t you try to change the world instead of telling people what they should do.

My twin brother has the same talent as Derek. However, he has not had the benefit of professional training. He started playing when he was five. Like Derek we were born three months premature. It is amazing how people like Derek and my brother do such extraordinary things despite limitations.

I wish Leslie would research another musical savant from the 1860's, from Columbus, Georgia, by the name of "Blind Tom." He sometime went by the surname of Wiggins, or times, Bethune. Mark Twain met and wrote about him. This would be a good follow-up story on musical savants. He traveled the U.S. and Europe, performing. He was first buried in New York, however, some say that he is now buried in Columbus, GA.
