See all 72 Commentspope john said once the muslims r barbarians.
they will never join the eu the turks .
they should first learn the european values and then will see.
france say nooooooooo, even germany their allies say nooooooooo. uk say a bit yes by the brits .( they always up to something lol ) and the usa knifes them all the back all the time.christians join forces against the terrorist muslims
The Turkish state is very cunning, they allowed the Patriarchate to remain so that it could be used for political gain, to show to rest of the world that it as tolerant state.I agree that Turkey (and the EU), need Turkey to join the EU, so that positive changes can come about in the country and the region, and attitudes from other EU countries will change, but Turkey must make the first steps. Such as removing the illegal 40,000 troops in Occupied Cyprus, improving rights of all minorities in Turkey etc.
God Bless the Patriarch, he is a man of peace and all peace loving people will support him, whether Christian or not
1) Turkey has allowed the Patriarch to be based in its largest city. If they had wanted to, they could have asked him to leave a long time back. The fact that he has been allowed to stay where he is for such a long time is itself a sign of acceptance.
2) The city of Istanbul has dozens of churches and synagogues, as well as mosques. There is a thriving Jewish community, which came from Spain in the Middle Ages, fleeing persecution by the authorities there. By contrast, at least two European capitals - Ljublijana and Athens, lack mosques, largely due to local opposition. Most Turks have no problems with churches.
3) The Halki seminary was closed down by Turkish authorities in the 1970s. It can still be opened -- with the proviso it does so under the auspices of the Turkish education ministry. This is a rule applying equally to both Muslim and Christian institutions. The Orthodox church balks at its seminaries being controlled by the Turkish education ministry, so the school remains close at least in part, due to the position of the church.
4) One can talk for hours at length about the persecution of various ethnic and religious communities in Europe over the centuries. Europe today is afflicted by rampant anti immigrant/anti Muslim and anti Semitic sentiment, so Turkey is not unique in this regard.
5) The Turks have had their EU bid discriminated against by individual member states, so does the widely held notion that a Muslim country has no place in a Christian continent not qualify as religious intolerance itself ?
Before accusing others of intolerance, Europeans should take a close, hard look in the mirror.
It is important to note that the Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Bulgarians, the Kurds and many more have been subjugated to this persecution. It is unfortunate; however, that Rob Simon went to all extents to completely ignore Armenians and other minorities in his broadcast. Armenians are the largest Christian minority living in Turkey and suffer a great deal of justice, a recent notable example being the murder of Hrant Dink. Thousands of Armenian churches in Turkey have been destroyed or converted into mosques.
If CBS is ready to stand up for what is right, it should not succumb to Turkey's denial policy.
Let our prayers be with Patriarch Bartholomew and all Christian minorities living Turkey.
MY PARENTS WERE A PART OF THE EXODUS FROM TURKEY IN 1922 WHERE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE SUFFERED.
HOPE CBS AND AMERICA CAN HELP THE ORTHODOX FAITH TO REMAIN IN CONSTANTINOPLE WHERE THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH ORIGINATED.
PRESIDENT OBAMA HELP THE GREEK PEOPLE.
THANK YOU AND BRAVO
As a Greek living in the border with Turkey province of Samos,I deeply wish Peace and Prosperity for both countries.
It is time for the deep Turkish state to understand the golden opportunity to seal a democratic and prosperous future for both our countries into the great European community where all the rights for the people are guaranteed.
Before Turkey is accepted as a full member of the European community, it must understand that religious freedom is absolutely necessary.
It also saddens me to see that CBS/60 seconds decided to focus on the patriarchs' "feelings of being crucified and as being a second class citizen" for this spotlight instead of the real focus which is CHRISTIANITY; Origins and practice.
Sadness falls upon me too when I read some of these comments and the issue then becomes discrimination and anger against one another. Politics, state and financial propaganda are not religion and should stay out of it! People are the same all over the world regardless of the religion they practice. AND all religions practiced preach peace, love, and acceptance. We should all learn to understand each other and be accepting of our differences!! That's what makes our world beautiful....the people.
So getting back to the clip...
What I do like about this clip is that Patriarch Bartholomew was portrayed as he is. A simple and persistent man who practices what he believes, carrying on tradition and critical Christian history, regardless of the obstacles that he meets. He does not think of himself as higher than others and is very down to earth. He is NOT a megalomaniac or tyrant like many other historical religious leaders have been and perhaps that may be his downfall and why many do not know him. In my opinion this is what makes him a leader. Like Jesus, he is one of us. I applaud his courage!
Thank you for bringing light to this Christian history. People, Christians and Muslims alike, should educate themselves about the origins of religion and traditions practiced and not to follow blindly, as the root of all religion is the same. It is just branches of branches that have all cut themselves off the same tree and called them something different. We need a special on THAT CBS! Actually your Jerusalem series documentaries were very nice and depicted a lot of religions' point of views/ thoughts.
I would have liked to have seen more of the clips you included on your website like the visit of Batholomew's birthplace and the devastation to the area etc. with more focus on the history.
Just an fyi...Ortho means "right" (Greek origin) and the base of the Christian Orthodox religion.
Peace to all and Merry Christmas!
