After watching this case, the 30 year lead detective reminds me of
Inspector Clauseau (Peter Sellers). He is far too laid back in his demeanor to be doing an aggressive job that he is being paid big bucks to do. The female police examiner should be fired. She fears that if she changes her mind and declares his death a homocide she might not get that next heft raise. In San Fran Sicko, people are in jobs that they have no business being in due to politcal correctness or their particular sexual orientation. I understand the police chief or mayor there is an open lesbian. I must admit, with the amount of blood there and there is no DNA. But he might have been strong willed enough to get back inside his apartment while his assailant took off or was distracted. I am glad that the French police got involved to embarrass the Frisco idiots. I hope his father sues everybody remotely responsible for this keystone cops investigation.

I also wanted to mention the comment by the coroner in regards to changing the cause of death from undetermined to homicide. She said the only thing was someone to come forward or a suspect in the attack. Isn't she basically saying she wants the case solved before she'll change the cause of death. I thought it was the coroners job to rule on the CAUSE not solve the case. I also find it odd they never found it odd his watch was ripped off. Why would a suicidal person rip off his watch and why would he stab himself through his shirt? So many unanswered questions and it's too late to go back and REALLY look at the crime scene. I feel for the family and friends of this man as it is so obvious the SFPC dropped the ball in this case.

Just watched this and it amazes me they would classify this horrific murder scene as a suicide! Quite obviously it was a homicide. I find it sickening watching the lead detective discuss the case especially indicating that this was only one of 3 murder cases he worked that week as if that was an excuse. As citizens we expect the people protecting and defencing us to do everything in the power to find the person who has harmed us and qutie obviously this never happened. Even the coroner, while indicating there was no sign of him moving as if he was getting away from an attacker by the look of the blood droplets, revealed he did in fact try to get away from someone. If you look at the photos outside his apartment, they clearly indicate the pattern that he WAS trying to get away from someone. It doesn't surprise me that the home was locked because I assume he was stabbed outside and moved quickly, by looking at the blood droplets, and got into his apartment and locked and bolted the door to get away from his assailant. It also amazes me they think he would have the presence of mind with his injuries to clean off the knife he used to stab himseof three times and with all that blood well enough and place it gently back on a bowl. Yeah right. Maybe this detective has been doing his job a little TOO long. Maybe his 30 years have blinded him to the unpredictability of murderers and not every murder is the same.

Just finished watching this segment. Unfortunately the suicide vs. homicide questions obfuscates the real story- clearly he was murdered. Is there a coverup going on? Unlikely. Just typical figure pointing and obviously garden variety city homicide department not being thorough enough.

If I were to take an absolute shot in the dark at this here is what I would say. Random crime/attack with robbery a motive or perhaps due to an insult. Hugues was walking home relatively drunk. Someone passed him on the street or saw him and attempted to rob him ("yo, you got an ipod Give me all your sh*T!"). He says no, a brief struggle ensues, and the attacker stabbed him. The attacker fled on foot, (panicking because Hugues did not go down immediately) and did not bother to actually take anything because it was difficult or because it wasn't worth it. Or perhaps insults or words were exchanged on the street and resulted in the stabbing. Either way, Hugues stumbles inside and locks the door. This makes perfect sense. It is not uncommon for things to get violent quickly during an attempted robbery and result in nothing actually taken.

I used to live very close by. In my mind, not an overly dangerous neighborhood but not very safe at this time of night. My roommate was robbed at knifepoint a few blocks away 6 years ago. I also witnessed the aftermath of a drive-by shooting in the lower Haight. Public housing nearby and certainly petty drug dealers and common street criminals in that area. This story was sensationalized because this guy liked to party and chase women, but it seems like he probably had no real enemies. Random street crime that had a tragic outcome. His charisma and personality added to the mystery but I doubt this was personal.

SFPD's ineptitude is reflected in the Chief ... and Mayor.
