Nothing surprises me any more..we live in one messed up world....and kcstevew I honestly don't think it is fame and glory that law enforcement is looking for. I think it has more to do with being down right lazy...people want answers NOW and to get them off of their backs they close their eyes, stick out their finger, and the first unlucky soul they pick is the one that's taking a ride in the hot seat..and they know there is NOTHING we can do about it. I must say though with this case I am torn...he seems like the type that could kill his own wife but shes a looney tune herself...I think ultimately the diary says it all. Sounds like the daughter just does not want to accept the truth....I know from my own personal experience that children have a hard time accepting who their parents really are.

Ok. please correct me if I am wrong, but some of the letters that the daughter was reading looked like TOTALLY DIFFERENT HANDWRITING. It went from all noncursive writing that was smaller and neat and tidy. Other notes had large cursive writing on them. I wonder if anyone had done a handwriting analysis on those letters to see if the handwriting was consistant with the things people knew for sure Faylene had written (letters to teachers etc...). Maybe Doug had written all that suicidal stuff and planted it to make it look like Faylene was a nutjob. Doug was on tv, he was an actor by trade and he looks like he's acting while on stand. He didn't call 911 after Faylene died and I heard him say he pulled her out of the water and put her on the bed and do CPR, however the physician's assistant said he pulled her out of the water when he got there. So who ACTUALLY pulled Faylene out of the water? There are too many inconsistancies with his story. It probably started way before any of us will ever know, but Faylene falling off a huge cliff and telling him to shut up afterwards?! No, no, no. I do know that suicidal will get very euphoric before they commit suicide because they have decided they are doing it and they don't feel depressed or confused anymore, but that picture doesn't look like a woman about to suicidally jump off a cliff, she looks like a woman on her honeymoon with her family in the beauty of nature. Doug has no right to be out of jail in this lifetime I don't think

I believe everything wasn't on rosy side as Doug Grant portrays...however, the deceased wife's journal and actions indicate to me that she was a total nutjob. What a whacked out story. As for Doug's new wife...total hottie and what does she see in that puke???

LOL@sunlover518's comments below. Very funny (esp Led Zep comment)!!!

Wow...the prosecuter in this case is very sharp and smart. In reality, 9 times out of 10 in this type of case, the verdict would have been not guilty across the boards. But for the prosecutor to BRILLIANTLY weave his platform the way he did, so methodical and meticulous.....i am glad that Juan Martinez was the prosecuter b/c this Doug Grant guy seems like a sleezeball. Not calling 911 for his dying wife let alone should be 5 years in jail, so Mr. Grant got what he deserved.

This is a case of reasonable doubt.

Confusing to say the least. I think she was suicidal, but i think the reason was because she was so miserable with him that she just figured she would just let the other woman take over peacefully.

Now, it is hard to say if or how much he was involved. I woould have a hard time putting him away for life without any hard evidence. I think the jury was fair in giving him some time since everything was so unsure.

To me he does look awful quilty.

this crime made me really confused ..did he realy kill her or she wanted to die & killed herself ??!!
its strange to write in her journals that she wanted to leave or go meaning she wants to die ...on the other hand there was no evidence that he killed her BUT also he cheated on her & had an affair while he was married so he wanted to be with his new woman
confusing crime !!!!

This case is a perfect example of a prosecutor making a case where there is none. The state's own medical examiner said there was no proof that Faylene's death was anything other than a suicide or accident. There was no evidence. So they did what they could, trash the guys reputation and do everything they possibly can to make the jury dislike the guy. Sorry folks, gut feelings are not evidence.

This jury should be ashamed of themselves. They openly admitted afterwards they had been shown no evidence to prove Doug's guilt, but they disliked him. So they convicted him of manslaughter anyways just because they didn't like him.

Now who knows what happened, he could very well be guilty, but the point here is that noone has proven that he was or that a crime even took place. This is a sad day for our justice system. This is why family members of a victim should never be allowed to testify at a trial unless they have DIRECTLY witnessed something. The jury clearly felt they owed the victims's family something. So instead of stepping up and making the difficult decisions, they half-assed it and convicted him of the least serious charge just so they and the victim's family could feel better.

While I feel for the family, this case disgusts me. The state originally declared her death an accident. But because they were afraid of the bad PR that the family might give, they bent over and reopened the case. They still could not find any evidence. So they tried him anyways because they had an overzealous prosecutor who cared more about PR than justice.

The cardinal rule of a fair justice system is it is better to let 5 guilty people go free that it is to convict even one innocent person. Doug, whether you like it or not, was never proven to be guilty person.

Noone can dispute the fact that Faylene was not right in her head. While I to despise some of the things Doug did, it doesn't make him a murderer. The reality is his and Faylene's kids are the one's paying the price. Five years is just enough time to rob them of a dad when they need him the most, as they are growing up and becoming teenagers.

This case is hard to call and I agree with the jury verdict. I wanted the man convicted but there just wasn't any real evidence. The only evidence was a "gut feeling" and that is not enough to convict of murder. What I kept finding disturbing were the dead woman's journals. Her own words. I think her husband did manipulate her into thinking she should commit suicide, but she was so clearly emotionally disturbed that she is culpable also. I also think the husbands new wife is also mentally and emotionally manipulated by her husband. She appears to me to be unstable and controlled. I mean get real the new wife actually believes the deceased woman wanted to die and just hand her children over to her. That is insane. I don't know if any of this stems from their Church and I wouldn't want to say as I know nothing about Mormons. It's just the whole thing stinks. I didn't for one second see any relevance of the deceased womans daughters story. She didn't seem credible to me. And I thought it bordered abuse having the deceased woman's sons beg for their father to be spared prison time. But who knows the young boys may also be manipulated and controlled. I guess I am just thinking this is a creepy case. Scary in the fact that this man could control these woman like that and come out almost smelling like a rose. Very odd, very odd indeed.

I have a new theory. The answer is right in front of you. Open your eyes people! Look at the writing in her diaries. She jumps from PRINTING IN BLOCK LETTERS to sloppily writing, which extends up AND down over the base line. She is not even tempered, often changing the way she things, feels, and behaves. She sure has an imagination and she used it to kill herself. This is so obvious from a graphoanalysist's point of view. This is very sad, any way you look at it.

It is not the religion at fault. It is people who make a mess of things. People who misunderstand and assume. People who blame God for things he aught not be blamed for. People are imperfect. That is the point in these cases.

what a crock. no wonder people get God confused with religion and reject Him. mormons practice the most creepy and questionable behavior. it should be a clear indication to ANYONE that any person who is governed by their own sick doctrines and not the word of God (the Bible) alone is deceived. you reap what you sow when you pursue your own selfish desires and this case is yet another gazillionth example of that. i can assure you, "Jesus Christ" IS NOT the "God" of the mormons, no matter what they CLAIM. only a FOOL would try to make sense of this religious nonsense and have sympathy for any so-called "injustice" these quacks are now facing. serial adultery? ring-around-the-marriage-vows? sporadic messages from an iNdEcIsIvE "God"? please! does it really take half a brain to conclude that these are some seriously disturbed people? STOP REDEFINING AND LYING ABOUT GOD'S GOOD CHARACTER, you sickos! God DOES NOT and will NEVER endorse nor approve of SELFISH AMBITION, SEXUAL IMMORALITY and DIVORCE. EVER!!!

SOMETIMES THE STATE CAN GET CARRIED AWAY BY THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY. AND THE INVESTIGATORS.. A MAN I WORKED WITH FOR SEVERAL MONTHS,ALSO WE RODE TO WORK AND BACK ABOUT AN HOUR EACH WAY...HE WAS ACCUSED OF KILLING HIS LIVE IN GIRLFRIEND. BOTH HAD A DRINKING PROBLEM. HE SAYS SHE WANTED TO COMMIT SUICIDE SOME HOW A SHOTGUN WAS INVOLVED.. ORIGINALLY THE STATE AGREED THAT SHE DID SHOOT HERSELF .. LATER ON THE STATE CONTINUALLY HARASSED HIM BY WAITING TILL HE WAS DRINKING ON A WEEK END NIGHT TO QUESTION HIM THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES.. THEN THEY WOULD SAY THAT ISN'T WHAT YOU TOLD US LAST TIME.. EVENTUALLY HE WAS CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER. HE GOT 6 YEARS THE JUDGE ADDED 2 YEARS BECAUSE HE DID NOT PLEAD GUILTY.. LATER ON WHEN HE WAS RELEASED THEY FOUND PAPERS WHERE SHE HAD WRITTEN THAT SHE WANTED TO DIE..

Unbelieveable how out of control the fame and glory seeking law enforcement will go with their sensational witch hunts and aggressive hostile tactics against subjects like this man. In addition it is disgraceful the way the hungry media frenzy continues to fan these examples into out of control fodder for all the participants willing to sell their integity for any amount by encouraging and providing the stage for it. Fabricated stories where evidence is non-existent. Paid witnesses ( the only one), contrived drama obviously coaxed and coached out of an emotional child who lost her mother and only years later decides to contribute needed reasons to grasp a sense of the glory and reward for providing an answer where answers are beyond reach. Why do you provide the encouragement, recruit the actors and finance this type of injustice, are your profits and ratings worth all this?
