See all 30 CommentsWow...the prosecuter in this case is very sharp and smart. In reality, 9 times out of 10 in this type of case, the verdict would have been not guilty across the boards. But for the prosecutor to BRILLIANTLY weave his platform the way he did, so methodical and meticulous.....i am glad that Juan Martinez was the prosecuter b/c this Doug Grant guy seems like a sleezeball. Not calling 911 for his dying wife let alone should be 5 years in jail, so Mr. Grant got what he deserved.
Now, it is hard to say if or how much he was involved. I woould have a hard time putting him away for life without any hard evidence. I think the jury was fair in giving him some time since everything was so unsure.
To me he does look awful quilty.
its strange to write in her journals that she wanted to leave or go meaning she wants to die ...on the other hand there was no evidence that he killed her BUT also he cheated on her & had an affair while he was married so he wanted to be with his new woman
confusing crime !!!!
This jury should be ashamed of themselves. They openly admitted afterwards they had been shown no evidence to prove Doug's guilt, but they disliked him. So they convicted him of manslaughter anyways just because they didn't like him.
Now who knows what happened, he could very well be guilty, but the point here is that noone has proven that he was or that a crime even took place. This is a sad day for our justice system. This is why family members of a victim should never be allowed to testify at a trial unless they have DIRECTLY witnessed something. The jury clearly felt they owed the victims's family something. So instead of stepping up and making the difficult decisions, they half-assed it and convicted him of the least serious charge just so they and the victim's family could feel better.
While I feel for the family, this case disgusts me. The state originally declared her death an accident. But because they were afraid of the bad PR that the family might give, they bent over and reopened the case. They still could not find any evidence. So they tried him anyways because they had an overzealous prosecutor who cared more about PR than justice.
The cardinal rule of a fair justice system is it is better to let 5 guilty people go free that it is to convict even one innocent person. Doug, whether you like it or not, was never proven to be guilty person.
Noone can dispute the fact that Faylene was not right in her head. While I to despise some of the things Doug did, it doesn't make him a murderer. The reality is his and Faylene's kids are the one's paying the price. Five years is just enough time to rob them of a dad when they need him the most, as they are growing up and becoming teenagers.
