October 11, 2009 5:20 PM

Are we literally sleeping our lives away? Andy Rooney seems to think so.

Andy,
I am in the process of making a documentary on the history of Rensselaerville. I respect your opinion, and thought you might have a few ideas you could share.

Sleep? ir all depends on your life style. I'm 70 and retired. I fall asleep around 2 AM. Wake up around 5:30 AM. Then take a nap around 10 AM until around noon. Then might take a 2 hour nap later in the day.

Some time I sleep from around 8 PM until 11 PM. The watch the TV shows I recorded. Cut out all the stupid commercials.
Again I'm retired. I do what I want to, when I want, and where I want to. I worked for over 48 years. Life is good.

I used to be able to fall asleep just like Andy, then my nervous system changed and I now have lots of trouble getting ENOUGH sleep...sometimes only medication can help.

I sleep best when not overstimulated mentally or physically before sleep. I can hear the jeers now.

I asked an uncle that lived to be 104 how he did it...his reply was "...a clear conscience" ...more jeers.

Nothing beats a good sleep, so refreshing, I hope to be able to again in time. 7 HRS would be great.

I totally disagree with Andy. He takes sleeping so lightly as if proper sleep was not vital to our emotional and physical health. Please know how important getting enough sleep is to you and those around you. My 18 year old daughter, Nicole, was killed when the driver of the car she was riding in fell asleep, ran off the road and hit a tree. Drowsy Driving Kills !!! www.love4nicki.com

I,too, work in the sleep disorders profession. As I was watching Andy's piece, the only thought going through my head was, "Being able to sleep anywhere, and falling asleep standing up is NOT normal." Mr. Rooney does, indeed, need to go through formal sleep studies, and I would not be suprised to find that he is diagnosed with a sleep disorder or two!!

Here's an idea. How about a follow up bit following Andy through his sleep study and treatment regime.

As a boarded sleep specialist, I must say I laughed at Andy's bit on sleep. His view reflects an old- outdated perception that sleep is a waste of time and that falling asleep at the office is just 'what you do'. I wonder how Andy's life would improve if he had a sleep study? Even more, how American's lives would be enriched by a well-rested Andy Rooney on Sunday night? He should stick to talking about umbrellas.

I, too, am disappointed at Mr. Rooney's pedestrian comments, unenlightened by all the recent scientific knowledge about sleep.
