Rooney: I'm Glad It's Over

September 27, 2009 5:00 PM

Some people would be thrilled at the prospect of a long, lazy summer break, but Andy Rooney is not one of them. He's happy his break is over.

I see all these people getting all railed up over another one of Andy's hilarious segments, and i just can't fathom it. The best part of my week is seeing what witty topic he is going to inform us of. I just wanted to say to the world, I'm in Love with Andy Rooney!

Andy, I hope you don't take these posts too seriously. I, for one,
worry about the future of America whenever I read any posts or comments online. The grammar and the spelling, especially the spelling, of these responses bode ill for any hope of a competitive American workforce. Or maybe only high school dropouts are posting.
Anyway, to address the source of their (not "they're" or "there", OK?) indignation, one would have had a vocation that had paid vacation time, if one had an ejucashun.
Real Americans don't begrudge another American's success, also known as "The American Dream".

This segment actually made me cry.

There are so many of us desperately trying to stay afloat, and this clueless commentary was a slap in the face to people who fear EVERY DAY that the lives they have worked hard for are going to be snatched away forever. I know I do. Over the last 18 months, I have watched everything I have worked for slowly erode away from me.

This segment was so irresponsible and cruel, I'm shocked it was actually aired. If I had any money to spend these days, I'd boycott CBS advertisers in protest, but I guess since I don't, I don't count for anything.

I was shocked that Mr. Rooney had the utter gall to complain about taking a vacation all summer. My family has not had a vacation in 3 years, sir, thanks to the economy and my husband being laid off. How dare you complain about your wealth to me?

Dear American citizens,

Mr Rooney is not responsible for your professional or financial misfortunes. He is an elderly free citizen who fought for the freedom of the world and his country and his weekly commentaries is a small payment for his services towards the free rights of man. Despite his old age he still works taking 4 months of holiday per year. If YOU are fortunate enough to reach half of his age you should thank god if you find yourself having half of this mans wisdom motivation and love for ones country. The insulting comments written thus far only shows the character of defeated individuals whose biased judgment translates to anger . Mr rooney served his country and through his commentaries one should be able to get the message provided one has a normothymic non-biased mood.

Dear Mr. Rooney,

As one of the fortunate Americans that are still working, I only have time for one remark regarding your latest tirade. If you are so unhappy, trade places for one day with us. Maybe then you will appreciate what you have. For my vacation, I stayed home and did repairs around the house. I did get to spend Labor Day by a friend's pool.

Oh, by the way, get your barber to trim your eye brows. They are disgusting. Who told you that you look good with those things.

Andy, for all the years you have been on 60 minutes we have put up with your opinionated and antiquarian observations. Sometimes you have even been insightful and observant, but over the past several years you have drifted further and further from the reality that is America. For us Americans struggling to keep our jobs, pay our mortgage, and put the kids through college, your whining about the tedium of your extended vacation was the last straw. You are overpaid, out of touch, and irrelevant. Retire already and make room for someone who needs a job.

Geez, Maybe Andy could have helped flood victims or the people living in the sewers in Vegas, or the street people all over the US, etc., etc., etc.
Get a real life like everyone else.

It is unbelievable that Mr. Rooney has the audacity to complain about too much vacation time. This is just another example of how out of touch Mr. Rooney is with the real world. I was laid off from my job over a year ago, and I do my best to survive day to day. It must be nice to have a job to go to. I can only wish for that problem!

Considering he lost two good friends this summer, Walter Cronkite and Don Hewitt, (my condolences to Mr. Rooney on his loss), I'm not surprised he's anxious to get back to work, work being therapeutic for some people who mourn. I'm glad he truly enjoys and values his job. as an aside: I noticed he uses a Chemex coffee maker, those manual drip coffee makers make excellent coffee! Andy Rooney has good taste! Thanks for letting me share...

I work, I over work, and then I work some more. I?m not rich, I?ve been laid off many, many jobs, and have been frustrated trying to find job after job. So I am NOT out of touch with the average hard working U.S. citizens. While many of you are writing that Andy has been callous, I can say that I FULLY understand what he is describing here. Going on vacation IS a lot of work, and it?s exHAUSTING. I am at an age where I too like my routine. I like my job, and feel fortunate that I have a job, and I also don?t like the extra work before and after a vacation, AND I?ve recently decided that I too would rather work, than go on vacation. While I feel for those of you that don?t have jobs, and are frustrated trying to find a job ? I REALLY do feel for you because I?ve been there ? I truly understand and can relate to Andy?s missive, and do NOT feel that he is an out of touch elitist.

Andy ? You elitists are so out of touch with average hard working Americans, that you do a story on how tedious your luxury life style has become, that you lament having to take vacations. Now I understand your feeble attempt let us know you enjoy working, but to complain about your vacation in a time when so many people don?t have a job, is rather pretentious. However, I guess it?s enlightening to confirm what we have expected all along, that you are a boorish snob that could care less.

Hi, Andy

I'm not an avid TV watcher, but I do watch 60 minutes ever since I was little (not every week though). I really like your commentary at the end of the show. It is very funny and a break from everyday life (much to do about nothing, have you read the play?). My job is hard work and sometimes I dread coming to work, but I get what you are saying about vacation in your piece. I've been out of a job before and I finding a job and getting the knowledge to keep a job is my job. So, Andy thanks for your weekly commentaries. Keep up the good work.

Andy,

I have often been appalled by most of your "commentaries", but this latest rant has got to be the most ignorant of all time.

I agree with most of the previous posts, and I would like to say a few more things about your 5 minutes of ridiculous blathering.

First off, what is it you do all day at the 60 minutes office? Does it take you an entire 40 hour work week to come up with 5 minutes of idiotic drivel?! Why don't you take your summer vacation and get a job helping others?! Don't just volunteer a few hours here and there, but commit your full summer vacation to working for an organization that does some good in the world (the specific organization is up to you).

I don't even think it was good satire...it's like making a joke about raping babies (there is no tasteful way to say it).

The next time you feel the need to complain about your over privileged life and work schedule, think twice before opening your mouth...and use that gray matter between your ears as a filter. It is supposed to be a filter organ...filtering the inane and ignorant ideas that are synthesized by that obviously damaged brain you possess.

I only wish I had your job. I would definitely not complain about my vacation schedule, and I would definitely come up with much more thought provoking and interesting ideas.

The next time you're on your summer vacation and you're pondering how inconvenient it is for you, think about the other 90% of the population on this planet that would love to be in your shoes. And, maybe next year in the Hamptons you'll choke on your 13th. chocolate covered strawberry, and CBS will call and offer me your job...and I will jump at the opportunity!!!

Cheers, Andy!

DEAR MR ROONEY,
I WATCHED YOUR COMMENTS THIS SUNDAY ON 60 MINUTES YOU WHERE UPSET ABOUT YOUR SUMMER VACATION.. WELL MY SUMMER VACATION WAS WORKING FROM 6 AM TO 11 PM .4 TO 7 DAYS A WEEK ...MY HUSBAND WORKED 12 TO 15 HOURS A DAY 5 TO 6 DAYS A WEEK. JUST TO BE ABLE TO PAY OUR BILLS ..WITHOUT HAVING NOTHING LEFT OVER. WE MANAGED TWO DAYS OFF TOGETHER..WHEN MY HUSBAND GOT SICK .THAT WAS OUR VACATION PLANS ..SO WHEN YOU START TO CONPLAIN ABOUT HAVING TO PACK AND THEN DO NOTHING ALL SUMMER AND CONPLAIN ABOUT HAVING TO UNPACK. AFTER A SUMMER OF NOTHING ..... TRT TO REMEMBER ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT WOULD LOVE TO HAVE JUST 1 WEEK OF YOUR SUMMER TO SPEND WITH THERE LOVED ONES THAT.THEY WORK SO HARD TO TAKE CARE OF AND NEVER GET TO SEE AT DINNER TIME OR BREAKFEST..TRY TO REMEMBER THAT THERE IS OTHERS IN THIS WORLD THEN JUST THE RICH ..
YOUR NOT SO TRULY ANYMORE

As an American who just lost his job, I can only agree with all the other posters here that your complaining about your vacation is insensitive and way beyond the pale. I'm sorry your vacation was so vexing for you. There are millions of your American brothers and sisters and their families who have to watch our every penney for gas to just get across town. We are so sorry to hear about your vacation woes. Thanks for sharing.

You're a real jerk. You self admit spending only about 8 months out of the year working (I use that term lightly) 40 hours a week. During that time all you do is prepare for one 2 minute segment, whining about your miserable life while the real working people are...well, working. You could at least take your 4 months of PAID vacation actually working. Volunteer, give a crap about other people, animals, international initiatives. Use your sorry face that everyone is sick of listening to and put it where your high powered network mouth is. Idiot.
