America's New Air Force

August 16, 2009 5:18 PM

Increasingly, the U.S. military is relying on un-manned, often armed aircraft to track and destroy the enemy - sometimes controlled from bases thousands of miles away from the battlefront.

I'd rather have wings in the air rather than boots on the ground. A safer way to kill the insane members of the cult of islam is just what we need to protect the lives of our military and save American lives.

I have been reading alot of these comments and as a Navy Corpsman that has had the opportunity to be in country multiple times I'd like to weigh in on the discussion.

As far as the people commenting that the US is giving too much away with thier press coverage I can assure you that from my experience we never quote actual specs on classified weapon systems. This is no different then the propaganda from North Korea or Iran we are flexing our military muscles saying we are a force to be reaconed with fear us or suffer our wrath.

Unfortunatly the guys we are flexing on live in caves and have no cable so they didnt get the memo. At the same time this "Video Game Warfare" that is described as being in demand, is a great way to shop Air Force enlistment to a young generation that will soon be called on to fight in Afghanistan and beyond.

If I was a fresh faced patriot and had to chose between rolling with the grunts at great risk to myself in a foreign 3rd world country for 7 months to a year, or staying in the US and going home every day to my wife, and sleeping in my bed, the choise kinda makes itself.

To the officer that said he is as much in the fight as the men on the ground, respectfully sir, no...you are not. Go to a physical therapy ward and tell that to a guy with no legs and see if he chuckles. I get the psycological turmoil of killing every day, you go to work kill dozens of people, then your walking around the local mall like your an average Joe. That would get to me, but it's still a far cry from the blood sweat and tears of real combat. That said it is hardly cowardly as one person commented. To tell you the truth if I'm a terrorist on horseback, I hardly care if I'm being hunted by a manned F18 or an unmanned craft. I'm screwed either way. War is not pistols at dawn, it is aquiring the best gear and training and using it at the most advantageous time for you...not the enemy. There is no chivalry in war. It's murder plain and simple. Mass in most cases, legal only for the ones who win.

You dont see Iraq or Afghanistan up in arms about all the IED's planted and how they blow up as many if not more civilian vehicles as military. Where are all the people protesting that brand of cowardice? Sorry to inform you guys, but America has never fought fair, remember how we dressed in rags and popped out from the trees and decimated "the red coats" what has changed now? Our tactics are the same win through any means necessary. That said the only way to win at war is to make a peace and end it. Fighting terrorism is like debating racism, or religeon you can change some peoples minds, but the rest are gonna believe what they believe no matter what. You cant beat everyone into submission, and untill this administration comes to that realization we will continue wasting our money in a worthless desert instead of surring up our countrys middle class economy, our inferstructure and our education systems.

If we cant even win the war on drugs, how can we defeat the worlds biggest drug dealers?

We the people MUST Take ACTION Against these DRONES Sept 25th-30th NO DRONES Peace Encampment at Creech! These military guys have obviously sold their souls for the 'safety' of the computer console allowing them to murder at will without any risk to their own bodies.

The one statistic 60 minutes did NOT mention is that 50 civilians are murdered for every one "bad guy" 'eliminated' by drones.

Come to Creech AFB, Indian Springs, Nevada from Sept 25th - 30th to join our CodePINK Women's NO DRONES Peace Encampment with Cindy Sheehan, Progessive Democrats of America and many more. Check out our calendar at bayareacodepink.org for more details or call 510-540-7007

Together we WILL GROUND the DRONES!

This is fantastic technology but there's much more to be done in this area. I'd like to see smaller, less expensive models designed and deployed to the field to be operated at short distances as air support for small unit missions. Third world countries are deploying small drones equipped with off the shelf video and limited distance comm gear. If we add a 50 cal and establish strict rules of engagement for it's use to reduce the likelihood of friendly fire incidents and civilian casualties, a system like this would be relatively inexpensive and I would prove itself to be invaluable in protecting our troops. Several of our allies, including Israel, already have drones in production and in the field that could be adapted to the mission. As an alernative to starting a new program from scratch, we could purchase suitable models that are already in production and modify them to best serve our needs.

Boo Hoo...to all of you who sit back and have nothing to complain about except the men and women of our military. I've seen it first hand and it is not a pretty site...thank God for the UAV's. The number of American lives that they have saved have made UAV's worth their price in gold.
For those of you who complain about the collatoral damage, tell the insurgents and Al-Queda to STOP hiding behind women, children and all the innocents of this war; which by the way WAS NOT STARTED BY US! If you'll recall 2 jumbo jets were flown into the World Trade Center.

If this gal is a reporter, then I am Dan Rather. Magic planes that fly through the clouds with remote control pilots, oh my! Kinda like a video game, not like real life.

60 Minutes, please find us a reporter who is intelligent, questioning, and articulate. PLEASE

THIS IS THE ONLY MEANS TO GET TO THOSE COWARDS THAT KILL US & BLOW UP OUR BUILDINGS WHILE THEY HAVE OTHERS DOING THEIR DIRTY WORK & THEY ARE <<<HIDDING LIKE RATS & MOLES IN THEIR LITTLE UNDERGROUND CITIES IN THE SAND.>>>>I THANK GOD THAT WE DO HAVE A WAY TO GET TO THEM & PROTECT OUR GUYS!!!!!! I HAVE FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS SHOT DOWN & KILLED. UNCLE & FAMILY TORTURED & HELD PRISONERS.MY FATHER WAS SHOT , UNCLE SHOT WWII & OTHER RELATIVES. MY STEP FATHER FOUGHT IN VIET NAM.

WE NEED TO LOVE, PROTECT, RESPECT WHAT THEY ARE DOING & PRAY FOR ALL OUR AMERICAN CITIZENS & ESPECIALLY ALL OUR MILITARY!!!! LOVE ONE ANOTHER & STICK TOGETHER, BECAUSE OUR COUNTRY IS FALLING APART FOR LACK OF IT. II CHRONICLES 7:14 If my people call my name, humble
themselves, pray, ask forgiveness, turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven & I will heal their land. This is a prayer for our nation!!! All Americans praying constantly & God's miracle is our only hope !!!
This man gets to go home to his family, BECAUSE OF THIS WEAPON. MY NEIGHBOR, BROTHERS FRIEND, OTHER CLASSMATES & FRIENDS FAMILY MEMBERS DO NOT. THEY ALL DIED FOR YOU, ME & ALL OF US.

This segment really pissed me off. Watching that Air Force officer at home with his family and driving his nice SUV back and forth to work every day made me want to scream. How dare he say he is just as much in the fight as the Army and Marine soldiers who give up years at a time to go over there and patrol the streets and highways? That get shot at and risk their lives everyday? That have to leave the comforts of their homes? This guy gets to go home every night and put what what did that day away and sleep in a warm bed with their spouse. For him to say what his unit does to what the soldiers on the ground are doing is insulting the to rest of the military that don't get to do their jobs from the comfort of a fortified base in the US. What an arrogant as*hole.

I agree with everyone ~ that we DO RELEASE TOO MANY DETAILS. I thank 6o Minutes for sharing the information & thank Lara, as she risks her own life to enter these combat zones to get this information to us. Normally, the media is not telling us about the good we have done in Iraq & Afghanistan. I personally, know too many people that have served & are even willing to go back because of the things they have accomplished over there. I have spoken with many people in the military (in airports, on planes, etc., because I ALWAYS......ALWAYS make it a point to STOP & TELL THEM or to TELL THEM, WHILE PASSING BY
THEM...how much WE [I always say WE ] to let them know that MANY THANK THEM & APPRECIATE ALL THAT THEY ARE DOING FOR US. WE OWE THEM OUR PARENTS & ANCESTORS LIVES, OUR LIVES, OUR CHILDRENS LIVES & THEIRS. THIS WOULD NOT BE AMERICA WITHOUT THEM. They do not like war. They do not like killing. I hate war & killing, but I am willing to fight & could [IF I HAD TO] kill anyone [& SO COULD YOU] trying to destroy AMERICA [BECAUSE I LOVE AMERICA !!!!] This wonderful country, my children & theirs & their future is worth fighting for. Had others not served, fought [& many died], we would not have AMERICA. [SOUNDS LIKE TODAY, DOESN'T IT? ALL OF THIS COULD END & WILL WITHOUT OUR MILITARY & FIGHTING!!!!!]
If my next door neighbor,Valedictorian & Most Likely to Succeed in our class, had had access to THE NEW AIR FORCE UNMANNED PLANE, he & his co-fighter pilot would not have been shot down, nor WOULD HIS PRECIOUS FAMILY MEMBERS & HIS WIFE HAD TO SPEND MANY YEARS IN TORMENT & MANY TRIPS TO WASHINGTON D.C., WHILE HE WAS MIA[MISSING IN ACTION.] FINALLY, after years of investigation, he was declared killed in action [which resulted from evidence of findings of the plane & their "dog tags" at the exact location where they were shot down.]
CLOSURE ??? MAYBE? HE WAS DECLARED A WAR HERO [AND THAT HE WAS] & HIS NAME IS ON THE WALL & THE FAMILY CAN GO TO OBSERVE.............BUT ? YES, THERE IS DEFINATELY A GREAT NEED FOR THIS TYPE OF WEAPON BECAUSE WE KNOW WE ARE HATED, BECAUSE WE ARE AMERICA. Is this the future you want for your children?

THESE PLANES IN THIS SEGMENT ON 60 MINUTES MAY BE OUR ONLY HOPE, OTHER THAN OUR CONSTANT PRAYERS & A MIRACLE FROM GOD!!!!
We do not NEED to know everything, but if it helps my dear friend to sleep better at night, knowing that her precious grandson, serving in the Air Force, might be alittle SAFER, YOU BET I'M GLAD WE HAVE THEM.

Why was the identity of the officer involved made public? Name and initials clearly spelled out on his chest, and the facts about his family made public? We were told he has a wife and 2 children, lives in a Las Vegas suburb and drives his kids to school. He would not be difficult to find. That info was not necessary. That base is a combat zone even in Nevada. There are a lot of nuts out there. Someone should have thought this out.

You can run but you can't hide. The government allowed 60 Minutes in because they want the terrorists and other nations to know that we have a weapon in our arsenal that you won't see, you won't hear and when it strikes you know it and it's too late. Very simply it's called propaganda. A friend in the Special Ops told me that the Reaper capabilities are much more than were shown in the show and as he also told me when I asked about them that the information was classified and he could not say any more.

No domestic terrorist attacks since Sept. 2001, coincidence? How many prior to that? Coincidence?

The technology is cool but seems rather cowardly.

This week Sgt Bill Cahir was killed by a single bullet from a Taliban sniper in the much contested Helmand Prov where dozens have died. As a Sgt he was assigned by the USMC to be a Civil Affairs Off with a forward unit engaged in the new policy of General McChrystal to "win hearts and minds". He was mature and distinguished in his demeanor, and as an older respected NCO it was clear that he was the man in charge and the key to making connections with the local people. He was well chosen for his job by the Marines but he stood out like a sore thumb or beacon to the Taliban snipers. Cahir's work with the 4th Civil Affairs Group was good placement but the joint doctrine that guides what he does is dominated by the Army and shared by the Marines and USAF and makes no provisions for direct air cover at the very bottom of the command chain, the small Civil Action units, foot patrols that do the routine military actions everyday making up the real war landscape of Afghanistan. These small units work without the dedicated help of TACAIR & armed UAV's that are so hyped by your special reviews. This service is only attributed to the most important targets defined in a hierarchy that rarely - very rarely - ever assigns the drones down to the small unit level. The probability that a dedicated Reaper would be watching over a Sgt Cahir doing his Civil Action duties is "0". Priorities are tied to intelligence needs which are to first kill the VIP's and then, perhaps on a dull day, move down the battle-scape to one of the hundreds of small unit COIN actions that go on day by day. We are left with the impression that the whole UAV world is out to protect the troops and reduce casualties, but they are not. Even as General McChrystal tries to demonstrate to the Pentagon and the White House that the policy has changed, just pulling back on air strikes that would cause collateral damage is not enough, the present doctrine, even after seven years of insurgency warfare we still do not provide the proper type and weight of air power to the small units doing all the work. Insurgency warfare turns the military organizational pyramid upside down, and demands well trained dispersed operations not vertical silos of top-down micro control leaving 90% of those engaged to fend for themselves. If the Reaper's are so available how then do the IED attacks and sniper hits grow in numbers. Where's the balance and what is the worth for our troop's, especially all those Sgt Cahir's, Squads and Platoons that make the protection and interaction with the villages happen. In World War II, Korea, and Vietnam the military flew L-19 and O-1 small light manned observer aircraft were widely used to support the smallest of units. Over time the OV-10 came. There were plenty of them with plenty of dedicated pilots who were engaged in a real close war environment that used experience in a more beneficial manner. Pilots possessed a trigger finger linked to TACAIR and artillery, but they also coached the ground units as to what was around them and where events were popping up. Using direct comm not video links that take them from Nevada to a staff and then down the chain becoming information that takes minutes to process and relay. Few examples of real close support exist, and if there are some the war had to wait as it all set up. The OODA Loop for insurgents (thanks to Boyd) still is far shorter then the one attributed to a top-down Army structure where a pilot looking down a straw-view from a sensor to a point directed by an intelligence lead - highly classified lead of course, but an old lead in the seconds relevant to the small unit combat. Manned pilots in proper light aircraft with weapons offer a far greater contribution to the success in a war like Afghanistan then a killing robot with limited flexibility that costs 10x more, has terrible reliability, and despite the hype has a pilot Corps apathetic and frankly bored. Manned FAC pilots are the eyes and ears above small combat units because they essentially smell the enemy and adjust to changing situations quickly not having to backout of one magnified view to reset the focus and hope that the damn drone held course. Drones must be pointed or prepared in the planning for every step of the way - as done with high priority SOF and SEAL missions. This capability is not available at the low end of the organizational set up. Therefore we will continue to see sniper kills and IED hits on units trying to do the right thing - the right mission this country now wants. After seven years of war the services have made no changes necessary to properly support the Squad and Platoon levels with air support. The fight against the USAF OAX program for instance, which is only a half-step, shows just how unconcerned the generals can get. They seem to gladly exchange body bags to keep any disruptions from their major equipment programs, especially at a time where cuts are certain.

When Lara Logan asked the man, "Do you kill civilians?" He said, No; but was visibly upset. He should be upset. On May 8th, 2009 147 civilians were killed!
on June 19, 2009, 86 civilians were killed. AND MORE INCIDENTS OCCUR.
Dr. David Kilcullen said "Call off the drone War"
It is time to stop killing on average 90 civilians for every Taliban. If this death is o.k. for you, imagine it is your children.

WOW, IT STILL BLOWS MY MIND THAT ALMOST HALF OF AMERICA STILL DOESN'T
GET IT! [THEY ARE SLOWLY GETTING IT A LITTLE MORE & MORE.]I WILL KEEP PRAYING FOR ALL TO OPEN THEIR HEARTS, EYES, EARS & MINDS & TO DO WHAT
IS RIGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY, OUR CHILDREN, & FOR THEIRS, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!
P.S. IF YOU ARE WONDERING WHICH HALF I AM REFERRING TO, JUST ASK GOD.
HE WILL ENLIGHTEN YOU!

I totally agree why are we telling all our business we all know that everyone has access to the news and internet.are we really safe? Please
tell me the reason behind exposing all our business to all our enemies.
Do I care that we have all this new and high tech weapons? To some degree yes but I would rather know my children and grandchildren are safe in their beds at night. We live in Nevada lets not forget SEPT 11.

I have been following Lara Logan for several years now as she reports on the war in the Middle East. Yesterday's report on the new unmanned drones was no different. Her pieces cannot be categorized in any sense as investigative reporting, but pro-military, pro-war, 'Go-Army' stories. Shame, shame on her and on CBS! How can she be considered anything more than a hired gun for the military and the defense industries? For shame! So now we have an amazing new toy that allows us to take out people without ANY risk to the shooter. Lara as usual refers to the victims as the 'enemy', occasionally as the insurgents. CBS and Lara conveniently forget in her reporting that: (1) America used blatant lies to justify our invasion of Iraq; and (2) the insurgents are simply groups who oppose the US illegal occupation of Iraq, THEIR country. Now they are 'the enemy' in her words. It is a sham to call her kind of one-sided stories as investigative reporting, as all she does is go to the military and they feed her a story. Lara Logan fails the test as an honest investigative reporter. She and CBS forget that the American people voted for Barack Obama in large part because they opposed the war in Iraq, not because the new administration was going to bring us new and improved war toys. 60 Minutes can do, and has done, much better than this.
