July 12, 2009 4:53 PM

Funny though, when you go to a supermarket -or even popular markets for that matter- in Mexico, an increasingly high number of fruits and vegetables are imported from USA,as well as meat products; and i keep wondering why so, if we are supposed to be an agricultural country...so i guess the joke is in both of us right?. Thank you Mr. Rooney for a really funny piece in most trivial matters!

Here in southwest Michigan we have the same problem. We have alot of fruits grown in our area. We see acre upon acre of blueberry farms, apple ochards, grape vines, peaches etc. But when you go to the local supermarket, Hardings, most of the fruits are from Mexico. I recently quit shopping for meat there after I noticed the label on the fresh cut meat I had bought, said the meat is from USA, Canada and Mexico. Did I mention we also have lots a cow farms, pig farms etc. Why do we keep purchasing everything from other countries and wonder why there isn't any work?

Hi Andy,
You did an outstanding job conveying a timely and relevant message to the masses. You cut right to the point and answered questions each of us have dealt with at one time or another. Refreshing!

Dear Mr. Rooney - I too am from the central San Joaquin Valley where most of the beautiful fruits are grown. First off, let me give you a honeydew lesson. As you know, the chances of buying a ripe honey are slim and NONE. Don't give up. Buy that honeydew. Take it home and DO NOT PUT IT IN THE REFRIGERATOR. Leave it out on your counter. It may take several days or a week, but eventually it will lose its slick, shiny green look and become slightly yellow and will have a more "waxy" feel. I dan't exactly describe "waxy" but you'll know when it feels different. Then try it. It will be wonderful. As mentioned by the first writer, it would be a great public service if CBS/Sixty Minutes would do a feature on the plight of the San Joaquin Valley farmer. It is a lot more than fish. It would appear that the government, including Nancy Pelosi, want to literally dry up the farming in the San Joaquin Valley. Why? It would be great for you to find out. This valley is the richest agricultural area in the world and the food basket of the world, growing approximately 20% of the food for the U.S. Fresno County's agriculture alone amounts to in excess of $5 BILLION. Ms. Pelosi is a Californian, doesn't she have any pride in that? One other note, a pluot is a mix of plum and apricot. And one last parting thought, I like to see stickers so I can be sure the fruit is grown in the USA. Foreign countries don't have to meet near the agricultural standards the US farmers do. HELP US PLEASE! Mary Burnett

A "fruit" is a mature ovary. A "vegetable" is any vegetative part of a plant. Misunderstanding stems from a 1906 Supreme Court decision that ruled that for tariff purposes, tomatoes are a "vegetable," and therefore subject to federal import tariffs (imported from Puerto Rico in 1906). "Vegetables" tend to be associated with the use of salt, "fruits" are considered "sweet." There are hundreds of tomato cultivars. A tomato is a fruit.

Andy,
You should have retired 10 years ago. You think that you are clever, funny, and relevent. You are not. You are just old, grouchy, not funny or clever, whiney, and irrelevent. Please leave.

Dear Andy, Much of the beautiful fruit that you and others around the country enjoy comes from right here in the Central Valley of California. Considered the bread basket of America, and grwoing everything from fruits, veggies, dairy, cotton, rice, grapes, wines, etc. we contribute hugely to the economy of California and the healthy eating of the US. Did you know that because of environmentalistss and their supporters in state and federal gov't., our farmers risk losing it all because we cannot get enough watger to support our crops? Why, because of a non-native fish called a delta smelt, which tends to get caught in the pumps used for irrigation. So, rather than work on a fix or worry about the life and livelihood of a huge portion on the state, they have turned off the pumps to save the fish. With double digit unemployment in the "Appalachia of the West" we are and will continue to suffer. If you want to enjoy that great California fruit, instead of getting it imported from foreign countries (where who knows what food safety standards they actually employ)please do a piece on how the Central valley farmers are getting screwed. Sacramento and Washington are not listening, maybe with help from a sympathetic media, we can get their attention. Thank you and bleesings. Eat your California fruit while it still exists....you may not have the chance next year.
