Magdalen laundries: Women confined in convents

February 5, 2013 2:05 PM

Inside Ireland's Magdalen laundries women were virtual prisoners, condemned to a life of servitude, for perceived sins of the flesh. In 1999, Steve Kroft reported on revelations that shocked the Irish people, embarrassed the Catholic Church and tarnished the country's image.

The truth is always an embarrassment. First the pedophile priests and now the horror of how these women were treated comes to light. Some girls were sent to the Magdalen convents (another word for prison) for just looking like they MIGHT become a harlot. This meant they were too attractive.

There is a movie/book/song based on this called 'The Magdalens'. It is like watching/reading/hearing a horror movie/book/song by the way the nuns treated the women they held prisoners. A prison guard would be fired for treating prisoners the way these nuns treated these INNOCENT girl/women.

The Catholic Church is far from an upstanding religious organization, as this clearly points out.
