The Paper, Design Thinking, Barca

The Times-Picayune moves to a three-day-a-week publishing schedule, causing New Orleans to be the largest U.S. city without a daily paper; Also, global firm IDEO incorporates human behavior into product design -- an innovative approach being taught at Stanford; And, with stars like Lionel Messi and a youth academy bringing up the next generation of athletes, is Barcelona becoming the world's best soccer team?

It is the sign of the times, newspapers are becoming obsolete due to the on line computer. I enjoy getting my newspaper, the Chicago Tribune delivered to my home, even though it is delivered on the sidewalk and sometimes on the curbside driveway! Paper copies of newspapers will never go out completely! There always will be a need for a hard copy !

I love that you adressed the demise of print journalism, but sad that Morley beat the same talking points to deal while ignoring two important and related components of the Times-Picayune story:
1. Whether the website is free or not. Monetizing web access is a huge issue and drives whether or not most people will use a news website. Most won't. Being the only place to get local news is a big help, but still won't motivate most people to buy an online subscription.
2. The rising age of newspaper readers. Many newspsper readers are at an age where they aren't comfortable reading more than a couple sentences on a screen. They (we) want a hardcopy for any serious reading, and will likely never be online subscribers.

Sadly, the two are totally related. Older readers - the majority of the readers - are far less likely to buy anything online for any price.

To not even mention either of these issues is pretty hard to forgive.

Also ignored: Aaron Kushner, tThe Orange County newspaper mogul who is running in the face of his industy and beefing up his staff and generally making his publications relevant. Now there's a novel solution. Hope it works.
