12/7/72: Apollo 17 launched

On Dec. 7, 1972, Apollo 17 was launched. Astronauts Eugene A. Cernan and Harrison H. Schmitt spent 75 hours roaming the moon's surface while a third crew member, Ronald Evans, circled the moon in the command ship.
