Much has changed since 1993. Today, emergency medicine is a state-of-the-art, technologically advanced, fully recognized medical specialty.

Nearly all emergency physicians are board certified medical specialists, except in rural areas, which have challenges retaining specialists in any medical specialty.

Many emergency physicians organize themselves in groups that contract with the hospital, similar to how other medical specialists do, such as pathologists, radiologists and surgeons.

I wish 60 minutes would address this topic again providing us with current information. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

I've had such bad experiences with 4 relatives and myself. One laid in ER from5:30pm until 12:30pm when she passed away. I convinced her to go to ER saying, "the pain could be a blood clot" Guess what!!! She died before anyone touched her. BTW, this persons husband was burnt to death, back in the day, when oxygen tents were used; the compressor was proven to be faulty. This occurred 50years ago. The hospital, still servicing my area. Both my father and dad would have died before their time because of this local hosp. I would rather take a chance, traveling to another hospital than have an unqualified, inept dr. decide my fate.
